AVO Role • Understand the eruptive history, style of eruption, and hazards of Alaska’s volcanoes • Systematically monitor dangerous volcanoes and look for signs of unrest • Issue warnings and announcements about unrest, eruptions, evaluating false eruption reports, and announcing cessation of eruptions • During eruptions, provide frequent updates on the level of activity, the evolving hazard; work with NWS, FAA and others to track the ash cloud and other impacts

Clouds obscured views of the volcano by satellite all week.Korovin Volcano is a 1553-m-high (5030 ft) stratovolcano located on the northern part of Atka Island in the central Aleutian Islands, about 184 km (110 mi) east of Adak, 538 km (350 mi) west of Dutch Harbor, and 1760 km (1100 mi) southwest of AnchorageKorovin has erupted several times in the past 200 years, including 1907, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1973, 1976, 1986, 1987, 1996, and 1998. All of these eruptions produced minor amounts of ash and occasional but small lava flows. Reports of the height of the ash plume produced by the 1998 eruption ranged from 4900 to 9200 m (16,000 to 30,000 feet) above sea level. OTHER ALASKA VOLCANOESSeismic activity is monitored in real time at 31 volcanoes in Alaska. Satellite images of all Alaskan volcanoes are analyzed daily for evidence of ash plumes and elevated surface temperatures. Some volcanoes may currently display anomalous behavior but are not considered to be at a dangerous level of unrest. Wrangell, Spurr, Redoubt, Iliamna, Augustine, Snowy, Griggs, Katmai, Novarupta, Trident, Mageik, Martin, Ugashik-Peulik, Ukinrek Maars, Aniakchak, Veniaminof, Pavlof, Dutton, Isanotski, Shishaldin, Fisher, Westdahl, Akutan, Makushin, Okmok, Great Sitkin, Kanaga, Tanaga, and Gareloi volcanoes are at Aviation Color Code GREEN and Volcanic Activity Alert Level NORMAL. All are at or near normal levels of background seismicity. AVO did not detect ash plumes or significant elevated surface temperatures in the vicinity of any volcano.

We are changing the level of concern color code from ORANGE to RED. AVO is monitoring the situation closely and will issue further updates as new information and analyses become available.

Information Releases Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic ActivityKVERT INFORMATION RELEASE 17-07Sunday, May 13, 2007, 21:20 KDT (08:20 UTC)BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO: 55°58'N, 160°36'E; Elevation 2,895 mCURRENT LEVEL OF CONCERN COLOR CODE IS ORANGEGrowth of the lava dome continues. The activity of the volcano could affect low-flying aircraft in the vicinity of the volcano.According to seismic data from Kozyrevsk, probably the explosive eruption occurred at Bezymianny volcano from 14:30 till 15:00 UTC on May 11. According to satellite data, an ash plume extended to the north from the volcano. The ash fall was observed at Klyuchi from about 16:00 UTC till ~22:00 on May 11. Because the eruption of Klyuchevskoy volcano continued too ash deposits at Klyuchi were a mix of ash from Bezymianny and a small part (as addition) of ash from Klyuchevskoy. According to satellite data, large plumes different directions were observed over the Northern Kamchatka from 16:00 UTC on May 11. According to visual data from Kozyrevsk, at 22:30 UTC on May 11, there was one of hot avalanches that happens after the eruption. Ash plume rose up to 4.0 km ASL. According to satellite data, a long thermal anomaly (11 pixels in size) extending to the south-east from the lava dome was noted at 18:58 UTC on May 12 (NOAA-15).
