  1. Volcano Volcano is a rupture in a planet's crust which allows hot lava, ash and gases to escape from below the surface.Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging. The word volcano came from the Roman God of fire Vulcan.

  2. What causes Volcano to erupt ? The Earth's crust is made up of huge pieces called plate, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. These plates sometimes move. Between the Earth's crust and the mantle is a substance called magma which is made of rock and gases. When two plates collide, one section slides on top of the other, the one beneath is pushed down. Magma is squeezed up between two plates.

  5. Fast facts about Volcano Volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. There are around 1510 'active' volcanoes in the world. We currently know of 80 or more which are under the oceans. Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707 The biggest volcano in the world is Mauna Loa in Hawaii.

  6. More fast facts about volcano More than 80% of the Earth’s surface is volcanic in origin. Jupiter’s Moon Io is the most volcanic place in the solar system. The oldest volcano is Etna and that is about 350,000 years old. Most of the active volcanoes that we know about seem to be less than 100,000 years old. Volcanoes grow because lava accumulates on the volcano, adding layers and height.
