1. Birth and Childhood • Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon in the year 1938. • His father worked in a sawmill and was a raging alcoholic, a disease Raymond suffered from himself in later life.
2. Writing Career • Carver got his BA from Humboldt Sate College, although he first studied at Chico State. • Prior to getting his degree, he had to marry his high school girlfriend Maryann Burk, who was pregnant at 16.
3. Later Life • While at Humboldt, Carver published his first story “The Furious Seasons” in 1960 and his first poem “The Brass Ring” in 1962. • After drinking heavily for two decades, he stopped drinking in 1977 with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous and died in 1988 from lung cancer.
