  1. Welcome To The Year 1 Maths Workshop

  2. Aims Of This Workshop To explain how mathematics is taught in Year 1. To show parents a variety of resources that we use. To demonstrate a short sample lesson. To increase parents confidence in supporting their children at home.

  3. How Maths Is Taught • We use a scheme called Abacus Maths. • There are workbooks. • Teachers cards. • Computer software. • Photocopy masters. • The Abacus scheme guides us through the curriculum with the use of other support materials.

  4. Resources That We Use • Counting and sorting materials. • Whiteboards. • Number fans. • Unifix and multilink cubes. • Number lines. • 100 squares. • Abacus workbooks. • Computer software.

  5. In Most Lessons • All the children will start off on the carpet. • There will be a fast paced mental starter. • Then the teacher will teach a new skill or recap on a previous one. • The children will then work in groups often on differentiated tasks. • For the last 5 minutes the children will come back to the carpet and discuss their learning or play a maths game.

  6. So let’s look at a lesson together … The aim of this lesson is to teach some early addition skills.

  7. We begin with the fast paced mental starter … ∙ Ask a child on the carpet to choose a number between 10-15. ∙ Ask the children to add 2 to that number . ∙ Ask the children to show me answer on a number fan or write it on their individual whiteboards. .

  8. The teacher teaches a new skill Addition using ladybirds! Use number fans or whiteboards to respond.

  9. The Activities ∙ Once the new skill has been introduced to the children the children will then work in small groups on differentiated activities which reinforce the concept that the teacher has just introduced to them.

  10. The Plenary ∙ At the end of the lesson we gather the children together and review what has been taught.

  11. How To Help At Home • Encourage your child to explore mathematics web sites. • Read the handouts. • Do lots of counting. • Involve children in shopping. • Play games.

  12. Opportunity to look at the maths resources that we use in Year 1.
