Welcome to Year 1 Cherry Class Apple Class
Reading • Children read every day in class. They will have one guided reading session with the teacher, once with the learning assistant and at least once with a volunteer from Age UK. • Children will go to the library every Tuesday, to select a book they would like to share at home. They will need to bring these in each week. • Reading at home every day for five minutes is essential: join the library to explore a range of stories, read newspapers and magazines too. Don’t forget to share the school menu too! • When you read with your child please sign their Home Reading Record. Star Reader and Accelerated Reader • The children will begin to use Accelerated Reader and will be tested three times a year. They will then be given a book based on this assessment. • Children complete a quiz once they’ve finished a book – This enables them to move on if they achieve over 85%. This challenges their comprehension not just their ability to read!
Writing • Children are writing daily for a range of purposes. They need to use their phonic knowledge to spell words. • Big Write and up-levelling (green magic mistake pens). Every three weeks children will compete a piece of writing independently. Phonics This year the children will have a statutory phonics screen check (June 2017) The children are expected to read a range of phonic nonsense words and real words (pass mark has been 32). There will be a parent workshop after October half term.
Maths • Maths No Problem is a new scheme which deepens knowledge and understanding of maths. • Children work in mixed ability groups and are set practical tasks. They have focus tasks and then have an opportunity to reflect on their own knowledge and understanding. They then self assess and move their learning forward with a range of challenges they are set. • There is a lot of new vocabulary to be learned.
Connected Learning This term our topic is all about Toys. Curriculum coverage document is on the school Website Spring term is Kings And Queens. Summer term is Explorers.
House keepingExpectationsWe have high expectations of all the children. They are expected to have their diary and reading book in school everyday. Uniform All uniform needs to be labelled. PE kits PE is on Wednesday this term. Earrings must be removed. Water bottles Only water is allowed (no juice).
TripsThis term we are planning to visit Sudbury Hall (Museum of Childhood) in Derbyshire
HomeworkReading – children are expected to read most nights. Little and often is our message. They will have an Oxford Reading Tree book and a library book (changed weekly on Tuesday). Spelling – children will be sent home five spelling words per week. They will be tested weekly. They will be glued into your child’s reading diary. Maths – we recommend daily counting forward and back from a range of numbers. Look for numbers and shapes in the environment. Weekly homework will be set and based on the learning in class.
