  1. Partner share Learning Objective: Clarify words and phrases in informative text Standard RI4.0 Describe a movie where a toy comes to life.

  2. Partner share Learning Objective: What are we going to do with informative text? Describe a movie where a toy comes to life.

  3. Do you know what this is? Probably not, because it‘s not in context.

  4. Now you can see what it really is because it’s in context. It’s part of a bigger picture.

  5. To put something into context means to look at what’s around it. • When we clarify a word in context we look at the words and sentences around it so that we can understand the meaning of that word. Example: “The rock was grainy. It had a sandy texture. “ To clarify the word grainy we follow these steps

  6. The Importance of using context clues to understand unknown words or phrases. Good readers are able to determine the meaning of unknown words because it helps them better understand what they read.

  7. Example: “The rock was grainy. It had a sandy texture. “ To clarify the word grainy we follow these steps Steps to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. 1. Read the passage. Circle the unfamiliar word. Underline the context clues. Put the clues together and determine the meaning. If we look at the context clues, “sandy texture” we can determine that grainy means sandy texture.

  8. Steps to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.1. Read the passage.2. Circle the unfamiliar word.3. Underline the context clues. 4. Put the clues together and determine the meaning. A Precious Metal Gold is one of Earth’s most valuable metals. Why is gold worth so much? First of all, it is one of the most rare metals. There is very little gold on Earth. On average, there are only 10 pounds of gold for every 2 billion pounds of dirt. Secondly, gold is very hard to find. Most gold lies hidden deep under the Earth. Miners have to dig it out and process it. To get 1 ounce of gold, it takes 100,000 ounces of ore! If we put the clues together, that there “is very little gold on earth” and that there’s “only 10 pounds for every 2 billion pounds of dirt”, we can determine that gold is unusual. We can substitute unusual for rare and it fits!

  9. Steps to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.1. Read the passage.2. Circle the unfamiliar word.3. Underline the context clues. 4. Put the clues together and determine the meaning. Hidden Treasure How do miners get gold out of the ground? They begin by drilling a large shaft into the earth. They put an elevator into the shaft to carry miners up and down. Miners dig out tunnels from the shaft under each seam of gold. Then they drill smaller tunnels up into the gold seams. Next, the miners put dynamite in the seams, leave the area, and set off the dynamite. The gold ore falls into trucks set up on the rails. When we put these clues together we can see that since there are tunnels under the seams and into the seams these must be layers of gold in the earth.

  10. Steps to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.1. Read the passage.2. Circle the unfamiliar word.3. Underline the context clues. 4. Put the clues together and determine the meaning. Hidden Treasure (continued) The ore is transported in the trucks through the tunnels. Then it goes up the shaft to the surface of the mine. The ore is taken away to be processed. Finally, the gold is cast into bars. The bars are sent to special places where they are kept under lock and key. When we put these clues together we an see that transported means moved or carried.

  11. Closure • What did we use today to determine the meanings of unknown words? We used context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in informational text.
