  1. Today’s Passage: Luke 3:21-37 (Please read if you have not done so)

  2. 3:21-37 September 1, 2013

  3. “But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” (Luke 3:19-22) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  4. Why would Jesus need to be baptized? “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet he did not sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (II Corinthians 5:21) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  5. Why would Jesus need to be baptized? 1) To endorse the ministry of John. 2) To identify himself with sinners. 3) To set an example for us. 4) To to anoint Him as priest, prophet and king. 5) To identify with Gentiles via proselyte baptism. These explanations are not the primary reason! “He replied, ‘I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism - was it from heaven, or of human origin?’” (Luke 20:4) “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity…” (Hebrews 2:14a) “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” (I Peter 2:21) “He became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father’” (Hebrews 1:4-5) “I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, ‘You are my son; today I have become your father.’” (Psalm 2:7) “He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” (Luke 3:3) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  6. Why would Jesus need to be baptized? “I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel. I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.” (John 1:31-34) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  7. Why would Jesus need to be baptized? “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then John consented.” (Matthew 3:13-15) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  8. Why would Jesus need to be baptized? “...it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:13-15) “When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.” (Luke 2:42) “He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom.” (Luke 4:16) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  9. “…the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, ‘Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?’ ‘Yes, he does,’ he replied…Jesus asked, ‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth collect duty and taxes - from their own children or from others?’ ‘From others,’ Peter answered. ‘Then the children are exempt,’ Jesus said. ‘But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Use it for my tax and yours.’” (Matthew 17:24-27) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  10. Why would Jesus need to be baptized? “...it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:13-15) Jesus was not a sinner in need of repentance, but acknowledged that whatever God established as righteous conduct was something He needed to do. 3:21 - 37 JHK

  11. What does Jesus’ baptism teach us about the Trinity? 3:21 - 37 JHK

  12. The Nature of God’s Personhood 1) God is One. • He is not composed of parts (one indivisible being). • There is no other God. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4) “I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.” (Isaiah 45:5a) “We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one.” (I Corinthians 8:4b) The Trinity JHK

  13. The Nature of God’s Personhood 1) God is One. 2) God is Three. ▪ There is but one God. ▪ The Father, Word (Son) and Spirit are each God. ▪ The Father, Word and Spirit are each distinct persons. The Trinity JHK

  14. God is Three 1) Scriptural Statements. “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.” (I Corinthians 12:4-6) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...” (Matthew 28:19) “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (II Corinthians 13:14) The Trinity JHK

  15. God is Three 1) Scriptural Statements. 2) Divine Works. ► Creation. ►Redemption. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:1-3) In the plan of redemption, each person of the Godhead plays a unique and indispensable role. The Trinity JHK

  16. 1) God is one in essence, nature and substance. 2) There is one “what” and three “whos.” 3) The Godhead is not one in every sense but only in their partaking of the Divine essence. Essence - The intrinsic or indispensable properties that characterize or identify something. Essence describes what it is to be God and each person of the Godhead shares the same essence. Nature - The essential characteristics and qualities of a person or thing. Sometimes “nature” is synonymous with “essence.” Ontologically, each member of the Trinity possess the same nature. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58) “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) The Trinity JHK

  17. An ancient heresy which attempts to account for God’s threeness while emphasizing His oneness. Modalism is the view that in His inner nature, there are no distinctions within God, threefold or otherwise. However, in His external relationships with His creatures, God assumes three different forms (modes) in which to make Himself known and accomplish His purposes among men. Thus, these three modes of God are successive, not simultaneous. Modalism Jesus (Son) Gospels Yahweh (Father) One God (God is one person in three modes) Old Testament Holy Spirit Church Age

  18. Modalism The Father (in Heaven) cannot be true if... 1 “When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” (Luke 3:21-22) “The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit1 will come upon you, and the power of the Most High2 will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.3’” (Luke 1:35) The Spirit (in the air) 2 The Son (in water) 3 ...God is more than one person.

  19. The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament • The Holy Spirit’s work of equipping people • • Prophets. • • Craftsmen. • • Administrators. • • John and Jesus (though their story is in the New Testament.) The Trinity JHK

  20. “Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’” (Luke 4:17b-21) JHK

  21. “And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” (Luke 3:22b) Religion is working hard, hoping to earn God’s approval. Christianity is having God’s approval, then going to work. Did the Father say this before or after Jesus began his ministry? “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” (Ephesians 2:8-10a) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  22. “Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son… (Luke 3:23a) What do genealogies tell us? 1) God is faithful to work in each generation. 2) Sometimes our biggest contribution is the legacy of faith that we continue in our family line. “Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:1-2) “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  23. “…the son of Nathan, the son of David, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed,...” (Luke 3:31-32) “David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old.” (I Samuel 17:12) “…the son of Levi…the son of Amos, the son of Nahum…the son of Zerubbabel…the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer…the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph...” (Luke 3:24-30) 3:21 - 37 JHK

  24. “…the son of Naggai… the son of Maath… the son of Joda… the son of Perez… the son of Peleg…” A constant complainer? Inventor of algebra? Inspired the mentor in Star Wars? The first Hispanic? The first pirate? 3:21 - 37 JHK
