  1. Using the documents, compare the social and political position of women in the classical societies of China, India, Greece and Rome. DBQ Prompt

  2. SOAPStone Document Analysis Speaker Who is the speaker? What is their background and bias? Occasion Time and place of the piece. The context that encouraged the speaker to create the document. Audience To whom is the document directed? One person? A group? Gender, ethnicity, social class, political identity of the audience? Purpose What is the message behind the text? Subject The general topic, content, and ideas contained in the text. Tone What is the attitude of the speaker based on the text?

  3. Take out your document analysis from yesterday. Are you ready for the crazy sock competition?

  4. In order to learn the process of organizing and outlining documents for a Document Based Question on the AP World History test, we will practice by working in groups to solve the Great Shoe Mystery!

  5. 1. Get into groups of 5-6 spread out around the classroom.2. Each group member take off one of your shoes.3. Label each shoe with a number.

  6. 1. Groups rotate clockwise.2. Discuss the similarities and differences of the group of shoes you discover.3. Choose two or three characteristics common to some or all of the shoes and place the shoes into two or three groups.4. Write a quick description of the groups you developed and explain why each shoe belongs to its respective group.

  7. THESISNow you must develop a thesis statement. Your thesis statement should state something that can be proven or disproved by using EACH shoe as evidence to support your thesis. Write at least one but no more than 3 sample theses that you could use to address the Great Shoe Mystery.

  8. Point of ViewTheorize a little about how the person who wears each shoe would understand the world they live in. Write a quick description of how the shoe owner’s POV might be special, limited, or biased as it relates to your thesis.

  9. Missing Evidence?!?Identify and explain the need for at least one other source of appropriate additional evidence to help support your thesis.

  10. Rotate back to your own shoes. Read what your classmates theorized about your shoes as you place them back on your feet. Then return to your desk to discuss how our Great Shoe Mystery relates to the process of writing a Document Based Question essay.
