  2. Today - Feedback and discussion of practice panel discussion - More discussion skills:  Interjecting  Adding on - Practice panel discussion 2

  3. Practice Panel Discussion 1. How did you feel during the discussion? 2. What was difficult about participating in a panel discussion? 3. What do you want to improve for the next discussion? 4. Do you think your group discussed the topic adequately?

  4. Practice Panel Discussion - Feedback - Make sure you speak with a clear voice at an appropriate volume. - If you use any difficult terms/words, make sure you explain them. i.e., “What I mean by alopecia is baldness.” - Do not talk directly to the moderator (me). Direct your words to the audience.

  5. Practice Panel Discussion - Feedback - Make sure to bring notes/speaking points to the discussion. - Debate and disagreement is good, but make sure the debate is productive and not an attack.

  6. Practice Panel Discussion - Feedback - Remember to interact:  Make comments about other member’s info.  Ask follow-up questions or ask for clarification.  Disagree. - Don’t focus on reading so much. - Don’t be afraid to go “off script”  “Improvise”

  7. Interjecting - Politely interrupting someone. - Sometimes in discussion, it is necessary to interject, either to correct mis-information or to add/share crucial information. i.e., “If I could stop you for a second. Have we also considered not eating our horse and these strawberries instead?” How can you interrupt politely?

  8. Interjecting How can you interrupt politely? - I just want to add something. - Excuse me, … - If I could stop you for a second, .., - Sorry, I just need to add something. - Can I interrupt you for a second, please?

  9. Adding on - Providing additional information to something another speaker said. i.e., “I’d like to add that it would be much easier for us to collect the strawberries than to try and kill this horse.” What are some other ways to ‘add on’?

  10. Adding on What are some other ways to ‘add on’? - I agree. Also, … In addition, … - Just to add to what Tony said: … - To add to that, … - Right. Furthermore, …

  11. Practice Discussion 2 Topic: Bullying at School 1. What are the causes of bullying, the personality of the bully and the bullied (victims) or the society circumstance? 3. Should bystanders also receive punishment similar to the bullying student? 4. Bullying is getting increasingly violent. What kinds of punishment for bullying are proper and effective?
