  2. Today Introduction to discussions

  3. Podcast Episode 4 You will invite a guest host to your podcast. Guest host will join you to discuss your topic and provide commentary.

  4. Podcast Episode 4 Guest Host: You must listen to the previous 3 episodes of the podcast to prepare for your guest host duty.

  5. Podcast Episode 4 Guest host: Your duty is to add to the discussion of the topic. - The regular hosts will give the information. You will join the discussion of the information.

  6. Podcast Episode 4 There are 9 podcasts, so there will be 9 guest hosts. • One from each group. Episode 4: ½ of you will be guest hosts Episode 5: the other ½ will be guest hosts.

  7. Podcast Episode 4 Also: You will have a new Q & A session.

  8. Discussion What is a discussion?  A conversation or debate about a certain topic.

  9. Discussion - Create something - Solve a problem - Generate ideas - Debate an issue Why do people have discussions? - Enjoyment/entertainment • Boredom • Get information - Share ideas

  10. Discussion What elements do you need to have a discussion? - A topic (i.e., a problem) - A purpose - Questions - Participants (and sometimes, a leader)

  11. Discussion - Questions Words: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? Do/Does/Did? Is/Are? Have? Was/Were? wh- questions yes/no questions

  16. Discussion - Questions The previous questions don’t have strong content. - They could possibly be used to start a discussion. To make better discussion questions, first, we need to decide WHAT we are going to discuss.

Discussion – Deciding topic & purpose What are some possible topics based on the video? - What caused the world to have English mania - Is it right to regard these children as having English mania? - Is English more important than your native language? • Is it true that America doesn’t push people to learn English? • - Is it really helpful to study English?

  19. English – Is learning English really helpful to Koreans? Purpose: Answer this question. Is learning English practical for students who study for college entry exams? Do Koreans have much interaction with foreigners? Is it OK for kids to learn English before mastering their native language? When is the best time to start learning English? Do you think using English is “real life” is rare in Korea? Is it hard to get a job unless we study English? Is it true that learning English is helpful though situations are different for different people? Is it necessary to study English from 3rd grade by law.

  21. Homework Listen to: - See Through Edupod Ep. 2 and - Wednesday Night Film Festival Ep. 2 Write down some possible questions you could use to discuss these topics in the next class. • At least 5 questions for each. • Try to make wh- questions AND yes/no questions
