  1. Photometry vs Spectroscopyand other fights T. Appourchaux Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale, Orsay, France Siamois KO Meeting, 15-16 May 2006

  2. Outline of the talk • Space vs ground-based • Photometry vs Spectroscopy • Wrestling with sampling • Antartica vs Network • Conclusion

  3. Data utilized • SOHO data: GOLF, VIRGO/LOI • Ground-based data: BiSON, GONG • 10 years of data chopped in 150-days chunk averaged (representative of the mean spectrum)

  4. Space vs ground based

  5. GOLF vs BiSON

  6. GOLF vs BiSON

  7. GOLF vs BiSON

  8. GOLF vs GONG

  9. Space vs ground-based • Less noise from space (5 times less for GONG, 8 times less for BiSON) • Daily aliases can be reduced significantly (GONG case) • More modes can be detected at low frequency from the high S/N • The winner is: SPACE!

  10. Photometry vs Spectroscopy • Less noise from spectroscopy (20 times less) • Noise is shaped differently (low frequency noise higher) • About twice as many modes can be detected • Degree identification from different responses • Higher l can be detected • Still photometry is simpler than spectroscopy (significantly cheaper!) • The winner is: SPECTROSCOPY!

  11. Wrestling with sampling

  12. GOLF (@ 20 s) vs GOLF (@ 80 s)
