  1. Improper Attitudes Toward Sin

  2. Introduction This is an important lesson because attitudes determine actions! Proverbs 4:23 [23] Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

  3. Proverbs 23:7 [7] For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:

  4. I. Some deny that sin exists

  5. The Bible says sin is real1 Jn. 3:4 [4] Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

  6. 1 Jn. 5:17 [17] All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

  7. The Bible has some 21 cataloged lists of sin

  8. Gal. 5:19-21 [19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,[20] Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,[21] Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

  9. 2 Tim. 3:1-5 [1] This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. [2] For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

  10. [3] Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, [4] Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; [5] Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

  11. Sin is a universal problem – Eccl. 7:20 [20] For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

  12. The cross of Christ says sin is real If there had been no sin then there would have been no need for Christ’s death on the cross

  13. Heb. 9:28 [28] So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

  14. The present condition of our society says sin is real

  15. II. Some mock sin

  16. Proverbs 14:9 [9] Fools make a mock at sin:

  17. How do we mock sin? When we make it a joke, something funny, something that is fun, etc.

  18. Rom. 1:32 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

  19. Good humor is not wrong – Proverbs 17:22 [22] A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

  20. We need to look at the grave consequences of sin – an honest look at sin will make us mourn and not mock!

  21. III. Some love sin

  22. 2 Pet. 2:15 [15] Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

  23. Ps. 52:3-4 [3] Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. [4] Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

  24. Men find pleasure in that which they love As long as men love sin it will appear beautiful, fine, fulfilling, enticing and alluring TO OVERCOME SIN WE MUST COME TO HATE IT!

  25. REMEMBER – In loving sin we love the very instrument that killed Jesus Gal. 1:4 [4] Who gave himself for our sins

  26. IV. Some try to minimize sin

  27. We minimize sin when we do not call it what it is! Homosexuality – alternate lifestyle Alcoholism – disease Gambling – way to raise funds; recreation Euthanasia or “mercy killing”– act of love Abortion – a woman’s rights

  28. “Lust is called love, hard core pornography is tagged as art, …car theft is joy riding, cursing and obscenity is emphatic speech.” W. Winkler WE MAY TRY TO CHANGE THE NAME --- BUT SIN IS STILL SIN!

  29. We minimize sin when we say it is “no big deal” Proverbs 17:15 [15] He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.

  30. We minimize sin when we say: “He just couldn’t help it” “I had no other choice” “the devil made me do it”, etc.

  31. We must stop treating sin lightly – for to do so is to treat the cross of Christ lightly!

  32. V. Some dismiss sin

  33. Felix did – Acts 24:25 [25] And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

  34. This is a most dangerous attitude This is also the one thing that people most often do with sin Some may have intentions of obeying God someday – but not now

  35. What if you die before you get ready? What if Christ comes before you make up your mind? What if you become physically or mentally incapable of obeying God?

  36. Conclusion – Lk. 18:13 [13] And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
