  1. Passing the Monkey:  Learn how to redefine being helpful by sharing the Monkey and getting even more done. Janel S. Donohue President Rappahannock United Way

  2. If you ever think: • No matter how much I do… • Why is it that I’ve increased my efficiency, but now I have more to do? • Wherever I go, hallway, elevator, parking lot…even the restroom…my team needs something from me! • I’m working overtime on things my team needs from me before they can proceed with their assigned tasks… •  You need to be asking yourself…  Who’s got the monkey?

  3. Is this you?

  4. December 20, 2019 Exercise Front of Index Card I am great at delegating… I am not so great at delegating… Back of Index Card Excuses why I don’t, can’t, won’t delegate…

  5. December 20, 2019 Redefining What it Means to be Helpful • Notice how often you take others work and or responsibilities (monkeys). Use these recognitions as reminders to allow others to learn and develop. • Be on the lookout for situations in which others are trying to give you their monkeys. • Establish your boundaries and make them known. This is one of the healthiest behaviors you can bring to the workplace.

  6. December 20, 2019 Redefining What it Means to be Helpful • Develop a mindset that to be helpful starts by not taking on others problems. • Provide support by helping others learn to solve their own problems, not by solving other peoples problems for them. • Maintain the belief that the coachee has the answers within him or herself.

  7. December 20, 2019 Redefining What it Means to be Helpful • Ask questions to expand the coachee's thinking beyond his or her current capacity and to move him or her forward a plan of action. • Listen carefully. It provides a roadmap of what to explore and informs the development of quality questions. • Temper the desire to provide advice.

  8. December 20, 2019 Redefining What it Means to be Helpful • Focus on your habits to change your interaction style. Aggressively seek to ask questions first, rather than jumping automatically into giving solutions. • Understand that coaching is a choice and be prepared to share your strategy and intention when warranted. • Remember the big picture: coaching is an ongoing process of developing other leaders. Depending on time and complexity, sometimes coachee's will be able to reach solutions and action plans in one conversation. Other times it may take a number of conversations.
