  1. Orientation Induced-Crystallization in Multi-Component Melts Under FlowBenjamin S. Hsiao, Stony Brook University, DMR 0906512 This research project aims to investigate several newly discovered phenomena of orientation-induced crystallization in semi-crystalline polymers. With combined synchrotron X-ray scattering and rheological methods, many unanswered questions of fundamental importance can be suitably addressed. In the current study, shear-induced crystallization of propylene-1-butylene random copolymer was studied using time-resolved wide-angle X-Ray scattering (WAXS) technique. Polymorphism, preferred orientation, crystallization kinetics and disorder effect was investigated in detail based on entire 2D WAXS pattern analysis. It was interesting to find that at 100 oC, crystallites of P-B copolymer was a mixture of 80% -form and 20% -form isotactic polypropylene (iPP) crystals. The application of a step shear (shear rate was 100 s-1) induced -form crystals with c-axis of the unit cell oriented perpendicular to the shear direction. 3D WAXD plot quartered with experimental (two noisy quarters) and simulated patterns (two smooth quarters) Crystallinity change as a function of time during shear-induced crystallization of propylene-1-butylene random copolymer

The immediate benefit is that the project has produced tight links between two institutions (Stony Brook University and National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory). Graduate students and post-doc scientists have been trained in both institutions. They were exposed to relevant industrial problems and had a chance to tackle these problems with direct interactions from industrial (e.g. ExxonMobil and Dow Chemical) and international scientists (see left). They have also been involved in the Stony Brook summer research program, where they supervised several high school students to carry out sample preparation and experiments at Stony Brook.
