Agenda • What is currently occurring around the globe with addressing? • How does the level of addressing sophistication (or lack thereof) impact commerce? • How do private organizations provide data related to various addressing standards and posts? • What level of Change of Address could be impacted by a global standard and central repository for addresses? • Next steps?

  3. What is occurring today? • The Post, whether private or public, tends to keep addresses in a proprietary format and restricted in terms of access.

  4. What is occurring today? • Private industry is hampered in terms of being able to identify where a single point of contact is located for addressing and delivering commerce.

  5. What is occurring today? • With globalization, developed countries are more and more interested in accessing growing markets with transparency.

  6. What is occurring today? • Global data aggregators must deal with privacy issues and lack of standards, thus high cost to develop new customer markets for global commerce.

  7. What is occurring today? • Delivery companies have different addresses or physical locations than Posts, thus creating more confusion (i.e. is this a ship to address that accepts parcels or not?).

  8. How does the level of addressing sophistication (or lack thereof) impact commerce? • The Purpose of a postal system is to facilitate the delivery of mail and commerce.

  9. How does the level of addressing sophistication (or lack thereof) impact commerce? • If Postal systems cannot provide a universal scheme of addressing, as the globe changes in terms of contact points the value of the post will deteriorate.

  10. How does the level of addressing sophistication (or lack thereof) impact commerce? • Impact: • Undeliverable as Addressed Mail • Environmental issues for undelivered mail • People using VOIP, cellular phones • 911 Emergency location issues

  11. How do private organizations build, access and provide data related to various addressing standards and posts? • The address is the base ingredient of any database.

How do private organizations build, access and provide data related to various addressing standards and posts? • Examples of confusion: • Japan: Addressing database files can be licensed from the Post or a private company • UK: Multiple firms competing, thus multiple places to acquire postal addressing data.

  13. How do private organizations build, access and provide data related to various addressing standards and posts? • Example: • USPS licensed data annual license fees are in excess of $300,000 per year for one mainframe system configuration. Experian also licenses other postal data in the US to supplement this from other sources in excess in 2007 of $4.3 Million.

  14. How does this impact Change of Address? • If we as an industry are interested in a global change of address, we must have a central repository and defined schema to build the Change of Address data sets from.

  15. Next steps? • CC Proposal to POC to study feasibility of the centralized repository • Obtain Posts agreement • Finalize data schema (P14 & S.42) • Initiate central Data Repository • Keep data files to addresses only (no name data). • Global Addressing Summit
