Introduction (1) • Progress continues • spectrometer solenoid fabrication well along (cool down in progress) • first magnet will ship to FNAL for measurement this month • second magnet is wound and awaiting “packaging” steps • hopefully, we have most of the bugs out of the process now • decay solenoid tests under way; got some liquid but no power yet • beam line magnets all installed and tested • remote operation works...with some “features” Spectr. Sol. 1, nearly complete Q7-9 in place Spectr. Sol. 2 wound Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Introduction (2) • we have seen first beam...and it has seen us • as expected, protons dominate the yield • quadrupoles now on to give a realistic yield assessment • and decay solenoid will soon be on too • Ishimoto now has funds for absorber fabrication • thanks to Yoshi Kuno Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  5. Introduction (3) • Large test winding for coupling coil is beginning now at ICST • expect completion in July Mandrel for large test coil on winding machine at ICST Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Introduction (4) • Got additional funding in US • $100K supplemental funds from DOE • getting any funds in such a bad year is a good message • still need about $1.5M more from NFMCC over next 2 years to make our schedule • We should continue to acknowledge the cooperation of ISIS staff in getting us operational • STFC contract for two FCs now signed • lack of Phase 2 commitment for Step 6 is a problem • Plans for upcoming MICE meetings • LBNL (November 5-9, 2008) • Harbin (January 13-17 2009 • RAL (Spring and Fall 2009, exact dates tbd) Are meetings too close together? Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Goals for Meeting (1) • Priority issue • get Step 1 completed • complete beam line • incl. monitors, PPS, radiation surveys and monitoring,... • get remaining components operational • document production rates • install TOF0 and TOF1 • this is moving too slowly • integrate target and ISIS loss and bpm signals into MICE data stream • develop and document beam line optics solutions • get all power supply readings in same units (amperes) • determine misalignments • determine beam composition for each case • manuals and written safety procedures not being done in a timely way • we are obligated to enforce this  Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Goals for Meeting (2) • Other key items • make progress on infrastructure (shielding walls, floor) • finalize plans for SW fabrication • proposal for collimators and correctors • locate “parents” for radiation shields, He window for tracker • Complete RFCC module preliminary design review • design work has lagged a bit; needs to speed up • new recruit (Allan DeMello) playing key role now • a welcome addition to the MICE team • Review content of all EPAC08 talks • July 16 meeting   /2  Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

MICO Meetings • Key issues • need to test PSI solenoid • cryogenics, magnetics, instrumentation • check all MICE Hall equipment for compatibility with magnetic fields • microswitches, electronics, tools, etc. • also watches and credit cards! • interface between diffuser and SS end plate needs to be finalized • use template to drill holes in end plate • MICO meeting page set up by Yağmur • http://mice.iit.edu/mico/ • has lots of useful links • With AN’s oversight, meetings are going well Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Items from Technical Board (1) • Decay solenoid testing • get compressor fixed, cool down, and get magnet under power • aim for later this month • need to understand cause of newly discovered leaks • Vacuum system • discussing concepts • use roughing carts; keep absorber systems separate • need continuous pumping on absorber buffer volume • and need “backing” pumps for NEG pumps • Need to push for reviews as needed (not as wanted) • still want timely DAQ review, H2 R&D system review Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Items from Technical Board (2) • Some items missing from WBS list of responsibilities • radiation shutter • Must update L3 schedules and milestones for all systems (“Phase 2” planning) • need internal review when ready • present estimate indicates substantial mismatch between needs and STFC planning estimate • Should hold review of FC module after vendor design is complete • MICE review, not UK review • Concern over spectrometer solenoid schedule • would like to take Step 3 data before Christmas 2008 • depends how long after arrival to make magnets operational • can first one operate by October 18? Items from Technical Board (3) • New meeting approach • hold monthly phone meetings • one week prior to VC and EB meetings • will look at technical status of • target and beam line • infrastructure (electrical and mechanical) • cooling channel • detectors • open issues and problems • use WBS to drive agenda • action list, especially upcoming reviews • Infrastructure still a big deal • adding experienced electrical/controls staff from DL is really helping • magnetic implications of false floor design need evaluating ASAP • effort to complete this has not been available recently Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  13. Beam Line Issues (1) • Review plans to replace production target • provide test specifications and justification thereof • is high voltage test sufficient or not? • Get chiller in place for target water system • Understand production rate vs. loss rate in ISIS • making progress here, but need x500 ultimately (x50 soon) • consider different orientation, perhaps different material • evaluate both pion production and ISIS losses • Make sure diffuser mechanism safe under power failure • return to known state • also check piping space in this area (crowded) • Need suitable “local” signal for ISIS beam loss • also beam position monitor signal Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  14. Beam Line Issues (2) • Get target signals into data stream (via EPICS) • Diffuser schedule looks very tight • critical resource: electrical engineering • need quench test of mechanism, at Fermilab or RAL Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Cooling Channel Issues (1) • Magnets • develop written operational procedures for all devices • spectrometer solenoids, focus coils, coupling coils, absorbers • need plan for aligning spectrometer solenoid end flange to warm-bore axis • also, solve interference problem between supports and shield brackets • add holes for mounting diffuser • deal with issue of support stand shift of 100 mm • need workable scheme for cooling rapid discharge diodes in power outage • cool down time will be long, 1-2 weeks • must limit T to control stresses in cover plate welds • do we need compressor and heat exchanger? • is there an ODH issue during cool down? • magnetic measurements will need to look at both polarities • assess offsets after running current up and down • can we get external probes in place for initial measurements?   16. Cooling Channel Issues (2) • H2 R&D system • need to see schedule for this! • cryostat 50% done, buffer volume done (awaiting certification) • acceptable relief valves identified • vent system plans progressing (still a challenge) • Alan Ruddell joining team (25%) • issues: ATEX certifications (diagnostics); operational effect of He gas • Absorbers • need to reinvigorate thin window production • need to bring RAL safety committee on board for using LiH disk in Step 3.1 • also deal with “nuclear material” (6Li) issues in shipping • get the paperwork right on both ends • Bross and Nichols to coordinate interface issues Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  17. Cooling Channel Issues (3) • RF • define required interlocks • test of high power amplifier at Daresbury • making progress, but schedule continues to slip • suggest retesting amplifiers at high power after installation at RAL • is NEG regeneration compatible with magnetic fields? • define alignment specifications • installation issues need work (portable clean room, installation tooling) • review for cavity production was passed • need travelers for fabrication QC • provide written response to reviewers’ comments • need risk assessment in case of breaking Be window • evaluate need for • hybrids to deal with reflected power • pressurization of coax power lines (N2 or SF6?) • specify phase determination requirements Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  18. Detector Issues • Tracker • He window interface • need fit-up of patch panel and diffuser on spectrometer solenoid • and quench tests • Need to resolve TOF phototube base failure issue • need to get TOF0 and TOF1 to RAL ASAP • KL is “in the mail” • SW calorimeter design now launched (Giannini, Graulich) Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  19. Infrastructure Issues • Hayler needs information on pumps, compressors, and the like • will provide table to be filled in • Cable issues also important • preference is to send unterminated cables and proper connectors • want to install HV racks in final location where possible • need vacuum system information for cabling • what must be monitored and controlled? • pumps, valves, gauges • need magnetic field contours to finalize equipment placement • need to think about how many spare cables required Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  20. Simulation/Analysis Issues • Need to learn how to correlate particles with RF phase • could we use ISIS RF signal to develop/validate approach? • Requests for detector documentation not yet answered • Define and document all alignment tolerances • Can/should we keep TRD updated? • a parameter list would also be useful, especially to engineers • Compare interpolation algorithms between G4beamline and G4MICE • the former interpolation code should be faster • in general, keep “comparing notes” between code developers • Are meshing designs taking full advantage of well-developed FEA approaches? Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  21. Controls/DAQ Issues (1) • Target software needs to be integrated into both ISIS and MICE systems • discussion started • need dip depth in our data stream • DAQ needs operations manual • better written by a knowledgeable user than the designer • Send spectrometer solenoid power supplies to Daresbury for testing with control system in advance • Need to set up alarm handler • Need configuration save and restore • Need to start on RF control logic Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  22. Controls/DAQ Issues (2) • Repair dead TDC channels • Provide “burst gate” signal in MLCR • Need to look at how to correlate information between on- and off-line databases • emittance values may be only nominal—or incorrect—values • emittance or momentum settings for beam line and cooling channel may be different • reviewing “use cases” will be illuminating for the non-experts Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  23. Commissioning Issues • Common funds now due at RAL • Recall that WE are responsible for training our people • and being able to verify that they are trained • see http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/usertraining to get started • MOMs • schedule posted at http://mice.iit.edu/mico/momshifts.html • these people have been really effective at keeping things on track • too much switching around will defeat the purpose and should be avoided • We are not making full use of e-log for documenting work • should be used for more than just beam time • Need network printer and wireless network in MLCR Note: No system should be left unattended. Our folks must be there! Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

  24. Uncertainties • Step 6 remains vulnerable • plan to write letter to STFC • Infrastructure support proposed for Phase 2 appears under funded • Can we bring schedule for spectrometer solenoid #2 forward? • in any case, be ready to run in February Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman

Final Remarks • MICE management is grateful for the continued hard work of the collaboration • Please continue to support Andy Nichols • cooperate with requests in a complete and timely fashion • We are making good progress • still a rush to get everything built and installed • we continue to move inexorably forward • Be vigilant about opportunities to publicize MICE Wrap-up and Action Items-Zisman
