  1. Chapter 7 Identifying Subproblems If a problem is long or complicated, it is necessary to break it down into several subproblems. When you use subproblems, you first move your focus away from the main problem your are working with and instead focus on achieving a single subgoal. When you’ve achieved all your subgoals, you can then solve your main problem.

  2. Chapter 7 Identifying Subproblems Example Learning acrobats is a long and complicated process. Children usually start at the age of 4 or 5, and only a few will be selected for further specialized training. Diving into subproblems is a must.

  3. Look, no minimum driving age!

  4. Example • The "unicycle bowl flip," demands the mastery of several skills at once: • riding a unicycle with one foot, • balancing an ever-taller, increasingly-wobbly stack of bowls on her head, • kicking and catching on her head several bowls at a time. • Each successive flip is done with a greater number of bowls - and the bowls already caught are stacked high upon her head. As the stack of bowls on her head grows taller (and thus less stable), she must exercise greater care to keep them from falling. At a certain point, she must catch the flipped bowls blind, since she cannot look up without dropping those already perched on her head. video

  5. Example 1 According to the sod grower, it takes 3 quarts of water for every square foot of lawn in each watering. If your lawn measures 30 feet by 60 feet, how many gallons of water will that need?

  6. Example 2 Suppose that your engine quits in the middle of your flight. You altitude is 6500 feet (above ground) and you are descending at 500 feet/min. Your air speed is 120 mph. If the wind is light, can you glide 25 miles to the nearest airport?

  8. Example 3 Mixing Drinks A recipe of the drink “Fuzzy Navel” calls for 2 oz of Vodka (80 proof) 1 oz of Peach Schnapps (30 proof) 4 oz of Orange juice If 2 oz of 100 proof Vodka is added to 28 oz of this drink, what is the percentage of alcohol in the new mixture?

  9. Carrot Juice 80 quarts 12% 60% Wants 40%
