  1. Year 7 Lesson 1: Identifying Reliable Information Cyber Bullying

  2. Lesson Objectives This lesson students will: 1. Learn what is meant by the term reliable 2. Learn how to identify reliableinformation on a webpage. 3. Use your skills to identify and select suitable information from the internet

  3. Reliable information The official definition: “The Reliability of a piece of information is the degree to which it can be trusted.”

  4. Reliability What makes a piece of information reliable? Information can be judged reliable or not based on who says it, what proof they have, if they have anything to gain\loose by telling you the information. Who? Some people are more reliable then others, for example a professor of political science is more trustworthy on his subject then someone who is less qualified. Proof? The best test for reliability is evidence, can they prove what they are saying? Unfortunately this isn't always possible. Bias? Finally if someone has something to gain\loose by persuading you of their point of view then they will be less reliable then someone who doesn’t.

  5. Facts and opinions • A fact is something which is always true. For example • “The capital of France is Paris” • An opinion would be something which different people may have different ideas about. For example • “French people are much more friendly than English”

  6. Starter Facts and opinions You will be split into to groups and given a number of statements. Split the statements into two categories, those that you think are facts or which ones are just opinions

  7. What is cyber bullying? How is it different to normal bullying? In this module we will be looking at Cyber-Bullying. This is bullying carried out using technologies such as phones and the internet. Many people believe that cyber-bullying is worse then physical bullying others argue that it is impossible to ‘bully’ without causing physical harm. This module will allow you to look into these issues.

  8. Task 2 Identifying reliable information on the internet: In this module we will be looking at Cyber-Bullying. Many people don’t believe that it is possible to bully people using the internet, others want to ban phones, chartrooms and social networking sites because of it. Find facts (not opinions) from the internet. Use them to fill out task 2. Task 2: O:\ICT\Year 7\Using Information\Lesson1\Task 2.doc

  9. Plenary Before you leave: You have spent today looking at the reliability of information on the internet. Talk with your neighbour about HOW you identified websites as being reliable. You will then be asked to share your ideas with the rest of the class! Homework Its work for home: Make sure you have finished Task 2 of the class work! You should have at least a paragraph of information for each section.
