  1. What we would like to accomplish. In order for us to move forward from a technical stand point we need to make some serious changes in the audio systems in the gymatorium. In addition we need to make some changes in the way we rehearse. Presently none of the worship team gets to practice together in the gymatorium outside of doing a sound check on Sunday AM. Infrastructure We desperately need to move the amps and signal processing equipment from a non air conditioned space down to the equipment room which is air conditioned 24/7. At the same time we want to have a new patch bay installed. We want to build what we’ve named “The Ark” to move the FOH mix position down to the floor and out of the “black hole”. The Ark would be for the FOH operator and would have the board, tape decks, CD & efx unit only. From my own experience and having spoken with a consultant, for our purpose he recommended 3, 16 pair snakes to the Ark. We would use 32 pair for inputs and 16 pair for returns, auxiliaries and communications. We would also pull a 16 pair new run from the patch bay to the black hole. By using the old Yamaha board from the chapel to the black hole and installing it there we would use it for day to day operations to play tapes, CD’s and plug in a microphone without having to use the Ark. The accompanying sketches show how this would be implemented

  2. New 8-10ga speaker wire Signal processing, amps & patch bay To be located in equipment room. FOH Speakers New multi-pair cable Belden 9616 x 3 (48 pair total) New multi-pair cable Belden 9616 x 1 (16 pair total) Black Hole Ark

  3. Inputs from Stage and other areas Links to and from the Ark Links to and from Black Hole Signal destination inputs Install a new 19”x72” standard rack and move the signal processing and amplifiers from the furnace room down to the equipment room. Install new patch bay interrupting the current inputs from the stage to the black hole. Run 48 pair (3 x 16 pair) from the equipment room to the rear wall where the Ark will be eventually located. Also run 16 pair from the same rack to the black hole. Install 6 new mic stage inputs dedicated (but patchable) for the Yamaha in the black hole. Install dual DPDT relays for switching FOH & FB1 outputs between Ark & black hole. This allows us to be able to plug any microphone into either board (Soundcraft or Yamaha) and either board can drive the signal processing, amplifiers and speakers. This will also allow us to be able to patch any signal from the Ark up to the black hole for digital recording on the worship computer and allow for any future expansions. There will be extra wiring in place for a low voltage intercom system so that the FOH operator to be able to communicate with the operators and cue director in the black hole. 4. Most of the “patch’s” will remain in place from day to day. As an example only To patch #7 on the stage to #21 on the Spirit you would install a patch cable as shown with the red line To send the FOH signal from the spirit to the input of the signal processing and amplifier chain you would install a jumper as shown with the blue line. Once we “Patch Up” the changes would be minimal. What I’d like to see us do is put a switch that controls two DPDT relays in the signal input stage to switch between taking a output from the black hole or the Ark. If someone other than a tech needed to play a tape they just flip the switch and then they can use whatever we set up in the black hole for them before hand. Also I want to put an inexpensive limiter compressor on those lines so the system can be protected.
