  2. Learning Objectives • To understand how charities work to raise awareness of world issues. • To consider how the actions of individuals and organisations can benefit a community. • To create your own promotional materials to support the work of Water Aid.

  3. By 2015 the United Nations has set 8 international targets to reduce global poverty These are known as Millennium Development Goals – or MDGs for short

  4. Over the last few weeks we have been discussing water issues. • One of the Millennium Development Goals was to improve access to water and sanitation for half the world’s population. • 2005-2015 is the Water For Life decade. It is an attempt to raise greater awareness of world water issues. How does this link to charities?

  5. What can be done? • What can we do to raise awareness about world water issues and help people who don’t have access to safe water and sanitation? • Water Aid is an international charity. Its mission is to overcome poverty by enabling the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education. • Look at some of the work Water Aid do to help those in need: http://www.wateraid.org/international/about_us/media_centre/multimedia/video_selection/6574.asp

  6. Charity work • You have seen some examples of the work that charities like Water Aid do to help people in need. • An important part of their work is to increase awareness of world water issues and raise money to support these campaigns.

  7. Charity work • What can charities do to increase awareness of world water issues and raise money to support their campaigns and the work they do? What else? Leaflets to inform the public about the work they do and gain support. Fundraising events like World Toilet Day! TV and radio adverts Promotional materials such as stickers, coasters, mugs etc.

  8. Use your booklets to plan a campaign, Or to come up with suggestions about charities your tutor group could choose to support this year and reasons why the charity is deserving of additional help . TASKS: • Imagine you work for a charity like Water Aid. You are currently working on a campaign that wants to raise awareness about the world’s water problems. • You need to create a promotional tool to help the charity achieve its goal. You could choose one of the following: • Plan a fundraising event • Design an informative leaflet • Storyboard a TV advert • Write a letter to your local newspaper to persuade them to support your charity
