  1. REMOTE PBES Dan Gorley, P.E. IDAHO TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT

  2. PROJECT GOALS • USE PBES TO GET IN AND OUT QUICKLY • USE PBES TO LESSEN THE AMOUNT OF WORK NEEDED ON SITE • USE PBES TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS ON SITE • USE PBES TO FACILITATE MAINTAINING ACCESABILITY

  3. Finally something is happening on site! This project might actually get built.

  4. Great! Look who showed up on site. This guy’s wife was noticed spawning 75’ up stream. Job was shut down immediately per Fish and Games request. The evaluation process took 2+ weeks until environmental agencies were satisfied that eggs would not be harmed.

  5. This steel plate appears to be a great idea for getting all the mechanical splices for the wing walls perfect.

  6. Not such a great idea anymore. Even if they had used a bond breaker behind the steel this would be difficult to remove. This was not repeated on the second abutment. They used plywood for the next template.

  7. INITIALLY WANTED TO DO 1 CONRETE POUR • PLACE ABUTMENTS • ATTACH WING WALLS • SET GIRDERS • POUR CONCRETE

  8. DECIDED THAT 2 CONCRETE POURS WOULD BE EASIER TO CONSTRUCT • PLACE ABUTMENTS • POUR CONCRETE CLOSURES AROUND PILES IN ABUTMENT • ATTACH WING WALLS • SET GIRDERS • POUR CONCRETE DIAPHGRAMS AND WING WALL CLOSURES

  9. Even with predrilling it’s not easy. These 10” piles need to fit in a 24” CMP.

  10. Did not meet the tolerances on 2 of the piles. Ouch! Why so much!

  11. Mom! I was just calling to say I love you….

  12. PROGRESS!!

  13. LESSONS LEARNED • PBES DID LOWER THE ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ON SITE • DO NOT USE STEEL PLATE FOR REBAR TEMPLATES WHEN PRE-CASTING • WHEN TAPERED INSERTS ARE ALLOWED THEY SHOULD BE PROTECTED • IT’S NOT EASY TO CHANGE CURRENT INDUSTRY PRACTICE

  14. LESSONS LEARNED (cont.) • PBES REDUCES THE POTENTIAL FOR MISTAKES IN THE FIELD AND REQUIRES CONCRETE PLANT CERTIFICATION—CONTRACTORS IN THE FIELD DO NOT REQUIRE CERTIFICATION • PILE DRIVING MAY BE A FOCUS AREA WITH PBES ESPECIALLY WHERE DIFFICULT PILE DRIVING IS EXPECTED • MORE DETAIL IN CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS MAY BE NECESSARY TO CONTROL ITEMS SUCH AS WHEN BACK FILL OPERATIONS SHOULD OCCUR
