Education pays! • According to the Washington Public Policy Report, October, 2006: • For each $1.00 spent on education in prison, the state will have a new benefit of $10.66 reduction on societal costs • For each $1.00 spent on vocational education in prison the net benefit of $13.74 reduction on societal costs

  3. Literacy • 8-10% cannot read at a 6th grade level • 1,500 attend classes annually to review basic skills

  4. Literacy continued • Literacy Improvement: (up to 6th grade reading level, and have been in school for over 90 days) • FY 07: 84 offenders • FY 08: 134 offenders

  5. GED’s • 42% of the offenders have not finished high school • 3000 offenders in school at any given time • Since 2003: IDOC has facilitated 3800 GED’s or diplomas (about 500/year)

  7. Vocational • Workforce Readiness • Over 500 offenders in class at any given time • 2008- 135 certificates were issued • 2009- 1266 certificates were issued • Vocational funding • IDOC-under $65,000 including staff • $2.00 per day per offender
