Life and Death • Born in Arcis-sur-aube in Chapange on October 26th 1759 • Was guillotined April 5th 1794 in Paris France • Last words were “ show my head to people it is worth seeing” • Danton said “my name is in the pantheon of history…and people will respect my head after it has been guillotined”

  3. Danton Himself • Nickname was “Orator of the streets • Was educated as a lawyer • At the age of 13 his mom sent him to troyes to be more closely supervised and educated. • Founded the radical cordeliers club • Associated with corrupt characteristics and had been known to take bribes.

Beliefs • Believed that it was necessary to destroy internal descent. • Believed the revolution could only succeed if it limited its program to the possible • Upholding the rights of property • Ending the war as quickly as possible by negotiation • Restoring order through a strong central government. Influence • Danton’s influence over revolutionary politics grew until he became a leading figure in the founding of the French republic

Government • Served in the revolutionary government Revolution • Convened the representative assembly of France • Brought royal troops from outlying areas of France into Versailles and Paris hoping to use them against the national assembly Fall of the Bastille • Involved in the fall of Bastille on July 14th 1789 • Voted to execute Louis XVI Reign of terror • Was one of the list men to speak out against Robespierre’s reign of terror
