Major principles “Prevention" means measures taken before a substance, material or product has become waste, that reduce: (a) the quantity of waste, including through the re-use of products or the extension of the life span of products; (b) the adverse impacts of the generated waste on the environment and human health; or (c) the content of harmful substances in materials and products; “Producer responsibility” and “Polluter pays principle” – persons that produce or contribute to waste generation or pollute the environment shall cover all costs arising from their activities; “Precautionary principle” should be considered within a structured approach to the analysis of risk which comprises three elements: risk assessment, risk management, risk communication. “Proximity” - waste have to be disposed on the nearest possible site at the place of their generation

  4. The 3Rs concept “Prevention” waste generation have to be reduced and avoided, when possible; Reduce – minimize the quantity of refuse to be treated/landfilled; by means of: IPPC Eco-design of products

  5. The 3Rs concept The ecological footprint is a measure of human demand on the Earth's ecosystems. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate. It represents the amount of biologically productive land and sea area needed to regenerate the resources a human population consumes and to absorb and render harmless the corresponding waste.

  6. Reduce Separately collect waste so to minimize the waste going for landfill!!!

The 3Rs concept “Re-use" means any operation by which products or components that are not waste are used again for the same purpose for which they were conceived or use once more….and more…and more: Gasoline – dismantling of ELVs and etc. WEEE (monitors, toner cassette and etc.) – collect, separate, second use etc. Batteries – changing the electrolyte; Cans – polluted aluminum canes and boxes;

  8. The 3Rs concept “Recycling" means any recovery operation by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials or substances whether for the original or other purposes. It includes the reprocessing of organic material but does not include energy recovery and the reprocessing into materials that are to be used as fuels or for backfilling operations: Recycling of used batteries; Recycling of lamps

  9. Recycle Spent oils – regeneration WEEE – Extraction & Refining of precious metals such as gold, palladium and silver ELVs – dismantling centers and recovery organizations – recovered metals /steel, copper, aluminum/, tires and plastics

The 3Rs concept – what for? • Minimize the use of natural resources by substituting these with recycled resources • Sustainable waste management i.e. reducing the amount for landfilling and cut down on incineration • More land for other purposes • Livable cities and clear environment through reduction of the discharge of pollutants from production process • Decoupling between economic growth and waste generation • Happiness and well being
