  1. Funding and Constructing a Greenway Craig Pearce (Schuyler Flatts Greenway) Chris Welch (Park and Nature Trail)

  2. Why do most greenways need funding? • A greenway is a community shared site or location that does not produce a revenue but still entitles initial and maintenance costs • Very common for governments to fund a greenway • No revenue = Funding is needed

  3. Funding Process • Identifying the benefits that your greenway provides to the community and/or land • Finding potential sources of capital that match your particular benefits • Through grants and/or private donations • Locally and Nationally • Government and Non-government • Applications

  4. Obstacles • Our greenways don’t enhance sales to businesses in the community • Difficult to receive donations • The benefits generated from our projects are small in comparison to greenways across the nation • Difficult to receive grants • Most grants only offer a lump sum for the project, and do not contribute to maintenance costs

  5. Applicable Grants • Greenway Trail Grant • Funding for trail planning, construction, restoration and historic landscape preservation. • The Hudson River Valley Greenway Conservancy Small Grants Program • Funding for local municipalities and organizations in the Hudson River Valley area for enhancement of recreational trails. • Recreational Trails Program • Provides funding for trail construction and enhancement to ease transportation • Transportation Enhancement • NTEC matches funds provided locally to help construct or enhance greenway.

  6. Private Grants • General Mills Sales Inc. & Hamburger Helper • Provides resources for creative projects to meet local needs • Foster’s Community Grants • Provide resources for projects in the areas of wellness, culture and environmental needs that benefit the community.

  7. Construction Volunteer Organizations • Boy Scouts of America • Troop 1022: St Francis De Sales Church • Troop 1078: St Pius X Church • Troop 1084: Churchof Jesus Christof Latter Day Saints • Corporation for National and Community Service • AmeriCorps • SeniorCorps
