  1. Constructing a bid Freya Tyrer, Paul Leighton NIHR Research Design Service for the East Midlands

  2. Constructing a bid • Important components of a good bid • How the Research Design Service can help you

  3. Components of a good bid 1 • Importance of study Does your study matter? Will it contribute to knowledge, affect practice, benefit patients? • Originality of study • Have you reviewed existing evidence in the area? • “I don’t see anything innovative or original about this study..” [reviewer, Wellcome Trust] • Is study appropriate for funding stream? • Does it have the potential to benefit patients? the NHS?

  4. Components of a good bid 2 4. The team - Experience - Necessary skill mix • “All researchers seem adequately experienced as they have many papers where there clearly have an interest in the area” [reviewer, RfPB] • Patient and public involvement • - How can you involve patients and public in your research? • - Acceptability of trials, consent leaflets, wording of questionnaires

  5. Components of a good bid 3 7. Clarity - Write for a scientific colleague who does not work in your area - Avoid spelling mistakes and grammatical errors 6. Study design issues - Is there a hypothesis? Are there well-defined aims and objectives? Is your study design appropriate to meet those aims and objectives? • “The study employs a retrospective design which is a weak method for identifying risk factors..” [reviewer, RfPB] • “The statement of the problem and the objectives sections are poorly worded. I had to read each sentence several times to make any sense of the applicants’ intentions, and I found this frustrating.” [reviewer, HTA]

  6. Components of a good bid 4 8. Stress anything special about your location “The research will develop methods pioneered in the department” [applicant, Wellcome Trust] 9. Be realistic about costs and time frames “I don’t think resources allocated are as transparent as they could be and therefore it is difficult for me to say it is justified..” [reviewer, RfPB application]

  7. How we can help you. • The NIHR Research Design Service for the East Midlands. A multidisciplinary team of researchers based at the Universities of Leicester, De Montfort and Nottingham. • Our role and remit. To provide advice and support on research design and methodology to those who are developing research proposals for submission to national, peer reviewed funding competition. To increase the volume of high quality grant applications to all NIHR funding streams. A specific concern for the RfPB funding stream.

  8. How we can help you. • How we work. Varies massively from case-to-case ... in some cases we simply review completed applications, elsewhere we more actively support and collaborate on all aspects of the application process. • What can we do? Aid formulating research questions. Identify appropriate funding sources. Identify and contact potential research collaborators. Advise on literature searching. Advise on quantitative methodologies. Advise on qualitative methodologies. Advise on Public and Patient Involvement. Offer insight into NHS organisation and research governance issues.

  9. How we can help you. • What have we done. In 2009 we were involved with 44 submitted grant applications, including 18 RfPBapplications. We are currently supporting a further 59 applications for funding - including 23 applications to RfPB, and applications to i4i, HTA, SDO and other funding streams. • What you can do now ... You can talk to us in the lounge area. You can talk to us later in the lounge area.
