  2. Chapter 10 • Read with a partner or alone. • Annotate as you read chapter 9. • Answer the questions on the next slide with your partner in your binder as you read.

  3. Chapter 10 • Why did Brain refuse to leave the fire at first? Why is the fire so important to him? • How did he resolve the problem of not wanting the fire to go out? • How large was his initial stockpile of wood? • What unexpected benefits did Brain derive from the fire? • Describe what Brian found under the sand. • Why was he unable to cook his food? • Provide evidence that despite his terrible situation, Brian remains optimistic (positive)?

Chapter 10 • Go back to your table. • We are going to share annotations with our groups. • Person #3 is going to be the leader. • Leader: go through the page numbers and ask for annotations like we do in the circle. Follow the same rules on speaking at your table as we do in our sharing circle.

  5. Chapter 10 Now let’s look at a second reading! • What do you think the fire symbolizes? • Pick any paragraph that you see with imagery. Tell me which page and paragraph you found. What event is this describing? What words help the reader understand the setting and events in the story?

  6. Chapter 10 • Brain :fought the hunger down” instead of eating all of the eggs he found. What does this say about Brian as compared to what he would have done before?
