  5. quill • A stiff, sharp hair or spine like pointed end of a feather • The porcupine’s back was covered in quills.

  6. registered • To have had some effect; to have made an impression • The message from the inspirational speaker registered in the minds of the students.

  7. smoldered • Burned and smoked without flame • The fire pit smoldered long after the campfire went out.

  8. stiffened • To have been made or became rigid; fixed • After a long workout, I work up the next day with a stiffened body.

  9. exasperation • Extreme annoyance; irritation; anger • In exasperation he took off his own hat and flung it to the ground.

  10. imbedded • Enclosed in a surrounding mass; fastened or fixed firmly • The carpenter imbedded the nail into the bookshelf.

  11. flammable • Easily set on fire • Flammable substances are not allowed on airplanes.
