  2. Term #1: ALLEGORY • Definition: A narrative in which characters and settings stand for abstract ideas or moral qualities. • Example: Chronicles of Narnia Aslan the Lion = Jesus (sacrifices for others, has a following, is all-mighty) • Memorization Tip: ALLEGORY rhymes with symbolic STORY!!!

  3. Term # 2: ALLITERATION • Definition: Repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds usually at the beginnings of words that are close together in a poem. • Example: • Memorization Tip: Think “LL” – L is a consonant – REPETITION OF consonant sounds

  4. Term #3: ALLUSION • Definition: Reference to a statement, a person, a place, or event from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports, science, or pop culture. • Example: The makers of the Scream movie ALLUDED TO Munch’s work of art “The Scream” in order to instill fear. • Memorization Tip: ALLusion ALL you need is love. Reference to the Beatles.

Language Activity #1 • Prefix : Letter or group of letters added to the front of a root to change its meaning • Ex: pre— : before, at first To keep from happening, to hold back pre_________ 2.To consider or meditate beforehand pre___________ Pre— 3.Judgement or opinion formed before facts are known, bias pre______________

Term # 4: AMBIGUITY • Definition: When the author leaves the ending of a story mysterious, unclear, and up to the reader’s interpretation • Example: The directors of the movie Inception left the ending unclear… was it a dream or was it reality?? • Memorization Tip: AmbigYOUity: YOU interpret the text in your own way.

  7. Term #5: ANALOGY • Definition: A comparison made between 2 things to show how they are alike in some respects. • Example: Mariners are to Pacifica H.S. as Matadors are to Bolsa Grande H.S. MASCOT SCHOOL  MASCOT SCHOOL • Memorization Tip: You can compare 2 things using the word “as” so think Asnalogy….

  8. Term #6: ANECDOTE • Definition: a short account of a particular incident or event that is interesting or amusing • Example: You tell your friends the story of how you met your crush. • Memorization Tip: DOTE means to love foolishly.

  9. Language Activity #2 • Prefix : Letter or group of letters added to the end of a root to change its meaning • Ex: ive— : showing or demonstrating a characteristic The cool guy scooted closer to the pretty, ______ive girl, but her _______-ive father gave him the evil eye.
