  1. Are these procedures appropriate for adolescents? Cosmetic Surgery in Teens Jessica Linares

  2. What is Cosmetic Surgery? Cosmetic Surgery is a procedure which alters a certain body part to “improve” its physical appearance. In 2011, there were 1, 579,079 surgical procedures in America (ASPS). According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, it was reported that in 2010, 210,000 American teens underwent surgical procedures.

  3. Why? In today's society, it is clear that many youths today have a broad idea of what is "normal“. Whatever is out of that range is brutally labeled as "awkward" or in other terms, different. It is lamentably reported, that bullying and teasing for these differences causes an enormous impact in teenagers.

  4. Common Procedures Rhinoplasty Otoplasty Gynecomastia Breast Augmentation Liposuction

  5. Rhinoplasty A procedure which includes the reshaping of the nose. These procedures may be executed whenever the patient reaches the age of 13 and the growth of their nose has been reached (90%). This procedure has an average cost of $6,000.

  6. Otoplasty A procedure which includes the reshaping of the ears. This procedure can be executed as soon as the cartilage in the ears has matured and fully developed, which is usually around the age of 5. This procedure usually costs about $5,000.

  7. Gynecomastia A procedure including the reduction of chest enlargement in males. Gynecomastia happens in about 1 in every 3 males (33% of teenage boys go through this). The average cost of these procedures is about $6,500.

  8. Breast Augmentation A procedure which uses implants to enlarge or restore breasts. Breast augmentation was performed on about 4,153 teenagers who were 18 years old or younger. This procedure is about $5,500 and needs to repeated about every 10 years.

  9. Lipoplasty Or also know as liposuction, is a procedure which reshapes the body’s figure to what is desired. The procedure can be valued from the price of $5,000 and $15,000. According to Dr. Hodgkinson, 10% of his patients who wanted lipoplasty were teenagers.

  10. Information It seems immoral to see teenagers attempting to “improve” their physical features at such a young age. Teenagers need to understand that surgery isn’t the way to go. These procedures can have many risks. These include the following…

  11. Risks and Consequences Infection Unwanted Scars Nerve Damage Asymmetry of a certain body part Death

  12. My Project I want to inform young adults and children on self esteem, and that outer beauty isn’t an essential part of our life. I will pass out surveys at Dekaney High School, speak to them about this topic, and calculate the results. I will also pass out surveys at the DayCare at Wunsche HS to see if whether or not children are already worrying about appearances.

  13. Statistics

  14. My Theory… If we start educating children at a young age that different is okay, there will be less bullying. Although schools are typically a “No Bully Zone”, we should truly reinforce this. The media can be harmful in the sense that children might want to look a specific way to “fit in”. I would love to start a petition on certain cartoon shows which have an effect on the way children see the world.

  15. More Information Instead of having parents who agree with their children changing their appearance while still being adolescents, they should love their children as they are. It is important for children to have that feeling of fitting in, whether it be from their family or friends.
