  1. Music Technology in Music Therapy

  2. General Goals in Music Therapy: • communication • self-expression • decision making • relaxation • motor skills • speech production

  3. Useful programs • Garage Band (simplest) • Cubase • Audacity • Finale

  4. Music therapist Jenny Plume helps patient Aaron Magruder create his own song on the computer. At Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN…. “The older patients are often drawn to computerized music-making programs such as “Garage Band” on her laptop.“ “But sometimes, what is needed most by a patient is a calming tune sung to them.“

  5. Some feedback from the kids….. “When she asked me if I wanted to make some music, I figured 'why not,'” Aaron said. I started listening to the sounds I could pick from and started making the beats. It's a fun thing to pass the time, and I think other kids would like it.”

  6. Other new innovations • Deep Listening Institute in Kingston, New York • New program: -physically disabled children and teenagers use tiny movements of their head to make music -ex. Can be used with individuals with cerebral palsy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqABv7MnmM

  7. Innovations contd. • Brainfingers - new MIDI software • Drake Music Project in London • students with cerebral palsy, including some as young as 11, wear a Cyberlink headband which detects electrical signals from facial and eye movements and even brainwaves • software turns the signals into “fingers” that move the mouse and play notes on the keyboard to create music • www.brainfingers.com

  8. Wii Music • player uses both arm motions and button presses on the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to control a six-member Mii band. • only requires the player to move the Wii Remote and Nunchuk like they were playing the instruments • Extra playing options: • - woodwind instruments = the player can aim the Wii Remote up or down to simulate an increase or decrease in blowing strength • - Guitar = the player can hold down the C button to get single notes instead of chords Mii Maestro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO0oHhubE_4
