  1. GCT Progress Report 26.2.07 • GCT Hardware Status: - Source Card Production and Installation Status. - Leaf Card Status. - Concentrator + GT Interface Status - Where do we stand with the electron trigger delivery. - Wheel Cards Status. - Pattern testing at USC-55. - GCT Schedule. • Summary and Outlook: GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 1

  2. Source Card News • Brief Status: -36 Source Cards received. - First delivery had problems: All had three wrong voltage regulators per card and were rejected. - The manufacturer acted promptly, collected them the same day and returned 24 fixed the very next day. Eventually they sent also the rest repaired. - Testing results out of 36 cards: (a) 21 perfectly working :18 + 4(old) + 2(prot) at CERN (b) 4 need LEDs repaired but otherwise working. (c) 11 need repairs (not serious) - Total working SC: 21 + 4 (LED) + 8 (old) = 33 - 18 Source Cards Installed at USC-55 in 3 crates of 6 cards - All 3 crates power up and working (software in progress) - Next production of 36 to go out within this month after production problems are understood. 18 in USC-55 GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 2

  3. Source Card Commissioning • We now have installed in USC-55 all 18 Electron- Trigger Source Cards as promised. • Production of the rest will commence soon well before they are needed for the Jet Trigger. • The system needs 63 SC and we will have at the end 80 in total. • All Source Card System elements are there now:  108 RCT-to-GCT ECL: At CERN  Optical links (Source to Leaf): At CERN  One PC: installed at USC 55; two PCs on order.  crates: 5 installed one to go  TTC fibres installed (thanks to Jan) • Software commissioning: In progress to be ready when the Concentrator with 2 Leafs goes to USC 55: End of this week beginning of the next… GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 3

  4. The Leaf Card Project • Leaf Card Production Status: - We will produce 16 Leaf Cards in addition to the 2 we already have. The GCT system requires 8 (2 electron + 6 Jet) and this will give us a complete GCT copy to run in the lab for firmware development and problem debugging. - We decided to produce the Leaf card via the original manufacturer even though it was significantly more expensive. - Two weeks later we found that this was the correct decision: The DC-DC converters (Power One X3015R1) were obsolete and this part of the board required layout for the new part. This has started already. • Leaf card Production: Delivery by April 2007 to LANL GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 4

  5. Concentrator Card I • The Concentrator Card Testing and integration with the Leaf and Source Cards is now finished. • Testing has been successful with 2 Electron Leafs mounted on it. • Electron data has been successfully transmitted from the 4 Source Cards via the Patch panel to the 2 Leaf Cards mounted on the concentrator and from there via the Electron FPGA to VME. • The S-LINK64 interface has also be testing including the sTTS using LTC and a FED-Kit. • The interface card with GT (GTI) has been tested standalone and is working. • The GCT Crate with 2 Leafs and a Concentrator is moving to USC-55 this week. • Integration/connection with GT will happen by next week (Greg and Manfred are discussing…) E-Trigger by March 07 GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 5

  6. Concentrator Card II • Order for assembling a second Concentrator Card is out: - This card will have repaired the problems found with the first: (1) TTC pin grounded under the TTC BGA chip. (2) Wheel Connector rotated by 180. - This will be the final version card for the jet trigger also: (1) As Leaf cards will not come until April we need to use this system. (2) I foresee that March and April 07 will be spend at USC-55 with pattern tests and understanding the commissioned electron trigger. (3) The system will be made available to CMS Trigger for testing but not 100 % as originally planned. More like 50% is realistic. • During the next 2 months the emphasis will be on under- standing the electron trigger using pattern data first from the Source Cards and later from HCAL/ECAL and RCT GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 6

  7. Wheel Card and Jets • Modified design which took care of the problems found with the concentrator has now been released and should go to the manufacturer. • Wheel Card back by April 2007 with schedule consistent with the Leaf Card delivery. • First Jet Trigger Assembly in May 2007 consistent also with the source Card Schedule which has all 63 Source card in USC-55 by and of April 07. • Jet Trigger in USC-55 available by August 2007. GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 7

  8. Pattern Tests • Where can one inject data on GCT: (1) At each Source Card there is a ½ orbit (~ 1500 events) buffer which can either be loaded (USB) with test data or used to capture RCT data under TTC control. (2) At the Leaf input one can also inject data which can be loaded via VME. • What do we want to do: (1) Load the Electron Source Cards with: 4 Crossings with 4 Electrons (different among themselves and from crossing to crossing) while keeping the rest of ~1500 crossings empty.  Make sure you get the right electrons in the right crossing (we are ready to do this from the software point of view) (2) Load entire Monte Carlo Events at the SC inputs and read them via Concentrator VME, S-LINK, GT.  Compare with the emulator results. (we will be ready in a week to do this from the software point of view) GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 8

  9. Q,M, HF Bits • HF Bits have already been directed to the Leaf Cards (old news) and this is where they are going to stay to provide an early trigger based on counting towers over energy threshold. • All other Q,M bits which form 66% of the GCT output data will be dealt with the new V5 system to be proposed by Matt Stettler in his talk. • Schematic Capture on this has started and FPGAs and Cross-Bar switches are on order. • First prototypes should appear mid-Summer 07 and will be commissioned after we are satisfied that we have: (1) All electron Triggers (2) All Jet Triggers + Emiss + Ht + Etot (3) All 2008 run triggers (Rings + HF-Energy) • A good guess is that this may happen early in 2008… • See Matt’s talk GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 9

  10. GCT Schedule I GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 10

  11. GCT Schedule II GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 11

  12. What can you expect from GCT • Electron Triggers by Mar. 07 • All Trigger Software by Summer 07 • Jet Triggers (includes Ht, Emiss) by Sep. 07 • Transverse Energy and Energy Ring (HF) triggers right after that. • I see no reason at the moment not to meet our schedule, in fact I am becoming more confident that we will keep to it. GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 12

  13. Organization Changes • Alex Tapper will be from now on the on-site responsible person for the Commissioning of the GCT and should direct the day to day group effort (GCT Commission Coordinator). • Jim Brooke remains the GCT software coordinator and now has also wider responsibility for calorimeter trigger software. • Matt Stettler remains our systems engineer. • Greg Iles will direct the Electronics commissioning in USC 55. • G. Sidiropoupoulos has been assigned to the Wheel Card. • Andrew Rose will remain on the Source Card Project until: (1) all 63 Cards have been installed (2) all 80 debugged (3) Monte Carlo uploading to the SC is finished and tested. Then (June 07 ?) will more to other subject of his thesis. GCT Review, CERN, 26/2/07 C. Foudas - Imperial 13

  14. Summary and Outlook Summary: • All 18 Electron Source Cards are in Crates at USC-55. • Next 36 Source card production to go out this month. • Leaf production activities started already. • The Concentrator is mostly (except GT<->GCT) tested and we are producing the second/final one. • Wheel card production is either out or will go out in days. Goals for March 2006: • Complete commissioning the Source Card system (software). • Install the GCT Crate with 1 Concentrator and 2 Leafs in USC-55 • Perform the GT<-> GCT integration and make a 2nd Concentrator. • Deliver the Electron Trigger in the next few weeks as promised. • Exercise the system with patterns (well prepared for this now).
