  3. PREGNANCY PERIOD DURING WHICH THE BABY DEVELOPS IN THE UTERUS, NORMALLY 40 WEEKS

  4. CONCEPTION • OCCURS AS A RESULT OF INTERCOURSE • BEGINNING OF PREGNANCY

  5. FERTILIZATION • UNION OF A SPERM AND OVUM • SEMEN IS DEPOSITED IN WOMAN’S VAGINA, SWIMS UP THROUGH THE CERVIX, THROUGH THE UTERUS, AND INTO THE FALLOPIAN TUBE • THIS SWIM TAKES SEVERAL HOURS • IF OVUM IS PRESENT, FERTILIZATION MAY OCCUR

  6. SPERM AND OVUM HAVE UNITED • THE MEMBRANE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE OVUM CHANGES AND DOESN’T LET OTHER SPERM ENTER

  7. THE OVUM MOVES DOWN INTO THE UTERUS AND IMPLANTS INTO THE UTERUS LINING. KNOWN AS EMBRYO FOR THREE MONTHS KNOWN AS FETUS AFTER 3 MONTHS

  8. FIRST TRIMESTER • 4 WEEKS • SHAPE OF HEAD DEVELOPS • BRAIN FORMS • FIRST HEARTBEATS • 6 WEEKS - ABOUT 1 INCH LONG • EARS & EYES START TO FORM • ARMS & LEGS APPEAR

  9. FIRST TRIMESTER • 8 WEEKS - 2 INCHES LONG • RECOGNIZABLE HUMAN • KIDNEYS WORKING • FINGER & TOES DEVELOP • PLACENTA & UMBILICAL CORD DEVELOP • 12 WEEKS • HEAD IS LARGE VS. BODY • SEX OF CHILD CAN BE DETERMINED

  10. SECOND TRIMESTER • 16 WEEKS • HAIR,EYEBROWS & EYELASHES APPEAR • EYES SHUT • SKIN COVERED IN FINE HAIR. • 20 WEEKS - 8 INCHES LONG • FINGERNAILS • MOTHER FEELS MOVEMENT • SUCKS THUMB • 24 WEEKS - ABOUT 1.5 POUNDS • CAN HEAR SOUNDS • LOOKS LIKE A BABY

  11. THIRD TRIMESTER • 28 WEEKS • EYELIDS OPEN • MOVES LIMBS • SKIN COVERED IN YELLOW, WATER-RESISTANT SUBSTANCE • 32 WEEKS- 5 POUNDS • SKIN HEALTHY COLOR • LUNGS MATURING • LONG FINGERNAILS • 36 WEEKS - 7 POUNDS • TURNS HEAD DOWN TO ENGAGE FOR BIRTH

  12. DELIVERY • CERVIX IS COMPLETLY DILATED AND BABY PASSES THROUGH THE BIRTH CANAL • TAKES 20 MINUTES TO TWO HOURS (PUSHING)

  13. CHILDBIRTH • DELIVERY AND LABOR TAKES PLACE IN THREE STAGES

LABOR • WATER BREAKS • WATER FROM SAC OF FLUIDS FETUS HAS BEEN IN FOR PROTECTION • CONTRACTIONS • INVOLUNTARY MUSCLE MOVEMENT BY UTERUS • USUALLY ARE ABOUT 30 SECONDS LONG EVERY 10-15 MIN IN EARLY LABOR • BECOME STRONGER AND LAST 1 TO 2 MINUTES EVERY 2 MINUTES IN LATER LABOR • FORCES THE BABY’S HEAD AGAINST THE CERVIX CAUSING IT TO DILATE AND EFACE • CERVIX MUST DILATE TO 10 CM

  15. DELIVERY OF AFTERBIRTH • PLACENTA, AMNIOTIC SAC, AND UMBILICAL CORD ARE EXPELLED FROM BODY • TAKES ABOUT 10-20 MINUTES
