  1. Operational oceanography activities in Oristano Roberto Sorgente*$, Salvatore Natale°, Andrea Cucco*, Alberto Ribotti*, Angelo Perilli*, Antonio Olita* *Institute for the Marine Coastal Environment - CNR, Oristano °Foundation IMC ONLUS, Oristano $National Group of Operational Oceanography – GNOO, Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network – MOON & 1

  2. Hydrodynamic Numerical Models for the marine forecast coupled with the meteorological forecast Data Assimilation techniques for the creation of realistic initial conditions Multi-platform and multi-parametric monitoring systems How can we be quickly informed of what’s happening at sea? The marine forecasting system Continuous and Real-Time production of integrated information on the marine environment with fixed quality standards, from the open ocean to the coast IN ITALY - National Group of Operational Oceanography(GNOO) IN EUROPE – Mediterranean Operational Oceanography Network (MOON) Operational marine forecasts at basin scale: INGV Operational marine forecasts at regional& coastal scale: • IAMC/CNR & IMC for the Sicily Channel & western Mediterranean • UniBO for the Adriatic Sea 4

  3. The observational system Oceanographic cruises since 2000 Collaborations: IAMC-CNR Mazara & ME ISMAR-CNR La Spezia ISAC-CNR RM (satellite) ENEA (VOS) OGS (ARGOS) Off-shore buoy 5

  4. Simulation numerical models at regional scale SCRM32 & WMRM32 Simulation numerical model at basin scale MFS1671 Simulation numerical model at coastal scale (1 km to < than 100 m) Every day the two systems give a 5-days forecast Every day the system gives a 10-days forecast 6

  5. temperature salinity Simulated surface fields of S, T and velocity, 28.03.2007 • Ocean Model: Princeton Ocean Model • Model Domain: 003° - 015.15 °E, • 39 - 44.52 °N • Horizontal resolution: 1/32°x 1/32°, • Bathymetry: U.S. Navy-DBDB1 • Initial and Lateral Boundary Condition: one-way nesting (asynchronously nested) to the OGCM-MFS1671 (temperature, salinity, free surface and velocity fields); VIFOP optimized • Surface Boundary Condition: momentum, heat and water fluxes from LAM 1-hour, 1/10° atmospheric forcing speed 7

  6. Due to NW Mistral action waves increases... • ...to reach force 3 in the Sardinia Channel... • …& finally they progressively decrease WaveWatch3 Model Coupling circulation-waves Friday 12:00 Friday 15:00 Friday 18:00 Friday21:00 Saturday 00:00 Saturday 03:00 Saturday 06:00 Saturday 09:00 8

  7. ..put the date.. Bulletin . Link from http://www.imc-it.org Animations, Volume Transports, Sections are also available ..the variable.. ..& obtain the plot 10

  8. Use of the simulation numerical models:- at regional scale • Climate change • Oil-spill • Save & Rescue - at coastal scale • Human activities impact • Infrastructures at sea • Coastal erosion 9

  9. Final items The IAMC/CNR • has an experience 10 yrs long on the sea forecast (projects MFSPP, MFSTEP, SIMBIOS,MAMA, ARENA, WERMED, ECOOP, SIGLA, PRIMI, MyOcean …) and is actually the only Italian Institute, with UNIBO & INGV-BO, to manage marine forecasting models in the framework of the operational oceanography; • is partner of the main Italian and European operational oceanography groups (GNOO & MOON); • has been producing 5-days daily sea forecasts of the western Mediterranean (WMRM32) and of the Sicily Channel (SCRM32) in NRT since 2006 and disseminate them through two web portals; • will make available the hindcasts of the western Mediterranean and the forecasts of the Gulf of Cagliari in a short time; • organizes seasonal/annual cruises in the Mediterranean at coastal and regional level. The cruises are mainly devoted to studies on climatology and the relationship hydrodinamic/biology and to evaluate the predictive capacities of the marine forecasting system. 11

  10. But to save the sea you MUST first download the FORECAST!! Thanks for your attention

  11. Posidonia Oceanica The environmental problems of interest…. Sea pollution from land sources Eutrophisation and extreme events Coastal erosion Pollution from hydrocarbons Natural environments conservation Sustainable fishing 3
