  2. What is Bullying • Bullying is defined as someone who keeps doing or saying things to have power over another person who has trouble defending oneself.

  3. Why Students Bully • Essential need for power • Need for negative dominance • Find satisfaction in causing physical or mental injury and suffering to other students • Feel some type of reward through their behavior with materials or psychological rewards

  4. Bullying Statistics • In the United States almost 30% of youth (over 5.7 million students) are estimated to be involved in bullying as either a bully, or a target for bullying, or both. • In a recent national survey of student in grades 6-10. 13% reported bullying others, 11% reported being the target of bullies, and another 6% said that they bullied others and were bullied themselves.

  5. Types of Bullying • Male versus Male • Physical • Female versus Female • Emotional • Female versus Male • Both physical and emotional

  6. Persons Involved in Bullying • Bully • The student doing the bullying • Often have been bullied themselves • Angry and Vulnerable • Bully students in a variety of places

  7. Persons involved in Bullying cont. • Victim • Student being bullied • Might have an overwhelming physical characteristic • Blame themselves for what is happening and will not seek help from others • Don’t fit in

  8. Persons involved in Bullying Cont. • Bystander • Third person witnessing the bullying • Choose not to step in or report bullying • Very important role

Signs Students Are Being Bullied • The student consistently has torn, damaged, or missing books or materials. • Has unexplained scratches, cuts, or bruises. • Has very few close friends they spend time with. • Does not want to or seems nervous going to and from school, walking to and form classes, or taking part in activities with peers. • Takes an illogical or extend route to school or class.

  10. Signs Students Are Being Bullied Cont. • Lost interest or begins to do poorly in school. • Appears sad, moody, teary, or depressed throughout the day. • Complains frequently about headaches, stomachs, or body aches. • Student has a loss of appetite. • Student has low self esteem.

Ways Students Bully • Non-verbal bullying such as writing nasty names or notes • Verbal bullying including derogatory comments and bad names • Bullying through social exclusion or isolation, • Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, shoving, and spitting, • Bullying through lies and false rumors

  12. Ways Students Bully Cont. • Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully • Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully • Racial bullying • Sexual bullying • Cyber bullying (via cell phone or Internet)

  13. Why Bullying Happens in Schools • Lack of supervision • Teachers look the other way • Students look the other way • Bullying rules are not consistently enforced

  14. How to Prevent Bullying • Develop policies or procedures that prevent bullying • School wide commitment and involvement of the goals and objectives • Involvement of every staff member • Increase parent and teacher involvement.

  15. How to Prevent Bullying Cont. • Forming clear rules and strong social norms against bullying • Providing support and protection for all students • Educating students about bullying • Educating students about how and when to report bullying

  16. School Commitment • With school commitment and involvement school bullying can be reduced by 50%.
