  1. Bullying In Schools By: Emily Richardson & Haley Cannon Period 3 2-7-11

  2. Problems: Students who are bullied are more likely to retaliate through extremely violent measures. In 12 out of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied. Students who are bullied have increased thoughts about suicide. There are about 15 to 25 reported cases of students committing suicide each year.

  3. Problems: Students who are bullied have a greater chance of experiencing health problems. Some of these health problems include anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and depression. Suicide can be brought on. People need to show their support by showing those being bullied that there are concerned and caring people out there. It’s a shame lives are lost from someone else’s cruelty.

  4. Problems: Students who are bullied act out of character, get poor grades, and avoid certain places. One of the most common places they avoid is school. Each day, about 160,000 children stay home from school because they are afraid of being bullied. This will affect their school careers and their future.

  5. The Cause: The root cause of bullying are students who have a strong need for power and negative dominance. Students who find satisfaction in causing others injury and who are often rewarded with materialistic items also cause bullying.

  6. Scope: Bullying is on a state level because it occurs in schools, and primarily the states regulate what goes on in the schools.

  7. 3 Solutions: • Make people more aware about the topic by telling people how it can affect students • Respond to incidents of harassment and report all incidents • Create school safety teams to review complaints and spot bullying before it turns bad

  8. Best Solution: The best solution is to make people more aware about how bad bullying can affect students. If you make people more aware about bullying, it will help students all over the state feel more comfortable in school and prevent them from committing suicide. It will also help them stay more focused in school and get better grades. This will help their future.Thereason why this would be the best solution is because it is a free solution and does not take very much time.

  9. Contacts: • We contacted Danny Short and Robert Venables. • We contacted these two men because they are the state representatives. We’re concerned about statewide bullying, therefore we wanted to contact our state representative. • Emails: Robert.Venables@state.de.us

  10. The Letter: 2-7-12 Dear Danny Short, Bullying in schools is a serious problem that needs to be attended to.Anywhere from 40-80% of children experience bullying at some point during their school careers. There are about 15-25 reported cases of suicide each year as a result of bullying. There are possibly more, but the bullying goes unreported, therefore the case is considered to be a normal suicide. Students who have a strong need for power as well as negative dominance are the cause of bullying. Also, the students who find satisfaction in causing injuries to others and get rewarded for their bad behavior are a part of the problem. It’s said that 7-12% of bullies actually do pose a serious threat. We’ve created a solution to this problem. We would like for you to bring more awareness to the state of Delaware about how bad bullying can affect a student. If you do this, it will help the students who are being bullied already and prevent them from committing suicide. They will get better grades and be more focused in school. This will help out their future in a big way.   Thank you for taking time out of your day to read our letter. I hope you are as concerned as we are about bullying and will take action to make the schools in Delaware a better place for students. Sincerely, Haley Cannon and Emily Richardson
