  1. At the intersections:GLBTQ People of Color: QPOC brought to you by the WOU Safe Zone Committee

  2. Introductions • Name • Program of study or academic interests • Where are you from? • Why are you here (what do you want to get from this session)?

  3. Who is the WOU Safe Zone? • Students, staff, and faculty make up the WOU Safe Zone • The WOU Safe Zone Committee works with the LGBTQQIA campus group, Triangle Alliance • Safe Zone trainers can come into classes, clubs, and residence halls to facilitate educational programming on LGBTQQIA topics

  4. LGBTQQIA—XYZ… What??? • Lesbian • Gay • Bisexual • Trans (Transgender, Genderqueer…) • Queer • Questioning • Intersex • Ally

  5. Race, Ethnicity and Sexual Orientation Defined • Ethnicity: relationship to a group of people sharing common and distinctive national, religious, linguistic and cultural heritage. • Race: people considered distinct based on physical characteristics and geographical origin. • Sexual Orientation:

  6. African American Experience Kordell Stewart former quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers on being gay: “You’d better not leave your girlfriends around me because I am out to prove a point. I am 110% man.” And his point?

  7. African American Experience The discrimination that African Americans have historically endured has also influenced the homophobia that exists in the Black community. How?

  8. African American Experience Other influences: • The Black Church and it’s role in the Black community • The role that traditional family plays • The “Man” and his role in African American culture • Gay Rights is a majority issue, not a Black issue • Homosexuality further contributes to the stigmatization and demonization of Black sexuality.

  9. Native American & Indian issues • Survivance • refers to native peoples’ strategies for reshaping, so as to retain, their cultures and societies in the face of Contact. • Sovereignty • the right to self-government or self-determination. How do these concepts relate to Indian sexuality?

  10. Native American: Two Spirit • The term Two Spirit firsttook hold during the 1990 Third Annual Intertribal Native American/First Nations Gay and Lesbian Conference in Canada.  Most leaders selected the term as a replacement for the outdated – and inappropriate - term berdache, which was imposed on Two Spirit Native Americans by people outside the community. • Although Two Spirit nowadays often refers to both LGB and transgender Native Americans, it did not start as an all inclusive term.   • Historically, more than 155 Nations had roles for Two Spirit people, and each had a specific name, meaning and traditions, including: nàdleehé (Navaho), winkte (Lakota), alyha and hwame (Mohave), and he’eman (Cheyenne). • Two Spirit Native Americans were greatly respected in their communities in the past, but the anti-LGBT sentiment found in other American communities is often the norm in Native American communities today. • Images of Two Spirit and LGBT Native Americans are extremely rare in mainstream media – only one openly LGBT character of Native Alaskan (Tlingit) descent was a series regular on scripted broadcast T.V. during the entire 2007-2008 season. Adopted from Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation

  11. Latina/Latino Experience Hispanic men and women are extremely reluctant to self identify as GLBTQ There is no phrase in the Latino/Latina community for “coming out”

  12. Latino/Latina Experience Influences: • The role of family and procreation • The Catholic Church • Sexuality is private and unspoken • Machismo • Gay Liberation is an Anglo Phenomenon • Dual Oppression

  13. WOU Safe Zone Mission The Western Oregon University Safe Zone program seeks to form a network of students, faculty and staff committed and trained to provide safe, non-judgmental and supportive contacts for all WOU community members regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and queer (GLBTQ) issues. It is symbolic of a willingness and a commitment to provide an atmosphere of unqualified acceptance and assistance. How can we all work towards achieving this mission here at Western?

  14. The WOU Safe Zone is YOU! Sign up to attend a Safe Zone training! Become a Safe Zone ally! Become a Safe Zone trainer! Join the Safe Zone Committee!
