  2. What are they? Transitional words and phrases keep our thoughts from sounding choppy or disjointed. They should be used in all types of writing, both narrative AND expository. It’s like dominoes when they are knocked down. They make the whole story flow together one after the other from beginning to end.

  3. How do they help us as writers? • Transitional words and phrases help writing flow from idea to idea, smoothly and naturally. They “glue” ideas together. Think of them like a “bridge” to close the gap between ideas in your writing. • Some transitions are just ONE word • Other transitions are considered phrases because they are longer groups of two words or more

  8. Let’s give it a try! Can you find them? • My brothers and sister and I have certain jobs we do to help the rest of the members of our family. For example, my main job each week is keeping our van clean. By the way, that’s a big job, let me tell you you. To begin with, I have to clean out all of the trash! Just think about it, I have to touch the rotten, decaying food while lugging it out to the street. You have to admit, that’s a pretty nasty job. Next, I vacuum under every seat and in the aisles. After that, I clean all of the windows, inside and out, until they shine. Then, I scrub every inch of the outside of the van with hot, soapy water. For the final step, I dry the van with special towels that don’t have any lint. As you can imagine, I’m always proud of the way I keep the van clean for my family.
