  7. TERRITORIAL DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION Over one third of the population lives in Romania, one quarter in Hungary, the other four countries share the other 5/12 Total area of six countries: 182,265 km2 Population: 20,409,44

  8. ECONOMIC FEATURES Land use Low ratio of natural and semi-natural coverage Dominance of human intervention GDP/capita The economic features vary between the most developed capital cities to the most underdeveloped counties in the EU.

  10. ECONOMIC FEATURES Tourism – status of Danube In Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia the Danube riverside is peripheral Tourism - exploitation The potentials are not fully exploited or they are not used at all

  13. TRANSPORT NETWORK: ROADS Road network: acceptable coverage Scarcity of motorway access at south-east of Hungary Quality issues of national, regional roads: poor quality - maintenance, repairneeded

  14. TRANSPORT NETWORK River transport The Danube is underused by passenger traffic in spite of the potentials Cycle routes The cycling path along the Danube is part of the EuroVelo network.

CONFLICTS Ecological quality of the river and the industrialized zones Risk of flood Uncontrolled and undisciplined tourism Entrepreneurial skills and practice are missing in the peripheral areas Serious limitation in language skills as well as skills in modern hospitality including communication and creativity Tourism related infrastructure is not satisfactory Standard problems Deficiencies in river based tourism (paddling, canoeing and yachting)
