  1. Germanium

  2. Germanium • Atomic number: 32 • Atomic mass: 72.64 • Symbol: Ge • Group: metalloids

  3. Physical Properties • Its melting point is 1720.85 °Fahrenheit • It boils at 5131 °Fahrenheit

  4. Where it commonly exsits • GeO2 + 2C → Ge + 2CO • GeO2 + 2H2 → Ge + 2H2O

  5. Common uses • Arsenic • Gallium

  6. History • Mendeleev predicted the existence of Germanium in 1871 as ekasilicon, and the element was discovered by Winkler in 1886.

  7. Appearance Grayish white

  8. Electrochemical Equivalent: 0.6771g/amp-hr • Electron Work Function: 5eV

  9. Pure state • In pure state, the element is crystalline and brittle, retaining its luster in air at room temperature.

  10. Where is it found? • Germanium is a mineral. Small amounts of organic germanium are found in some plant-based foods. • Inorganic germanium is mined and widely used as a semiconductor in the electronics industry. • Both organic and inorganic germanium have been sold as dietary supplements, though the organic forms are more commonly used today.
