  2. The 1960’s In this PowerPoint you will be learning about the 1960’s and what goes on in it. There are going to be some interesting facts and some depressing facts on the 1960’s.

  3. 1960, Black sit-in • On February 1, 1960 four African-American students from N.C Agricultural and Technical University. • Went to Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. • They asked for service but they would not serve them because they were “black”. • The four African-Americans were Ezell A Blar Jr. (now his name is Jibreel Khazen), Franklin E. McCain, Joseph A. McNeil, and David L. Richmond.

  4. 1960 Black sit-in (continued) • This act was not spontaneous they sat down one night and planed this all out. • It was a non-violent protest • It was a six month protest

  5. 1961 Ty Cobb • Ty Cobb was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. • He was born on December 18, 1886. • He was born in Narrows, Georgia. • He was the eldest of three siblings. • He grew up in Royston, Georgia.

  6. 1961 Ty Cobb (continued) • He batted left-handed and throw right-handed. • His batting average is .387 is the highest in history. • His batting average has yet to be beaten. • He played for the Detroit Tigers for 5 years. • He was an out fielder. • Then he died July 17, 1961

  7. 1962 Bob Marley • February 1, 1945 Robert Nesta Marley was born in Jamaica, Nine Miles. • His mom was an African-American and his father was an English white man. • People started to call him Bob and than later everyone started to call him bob. • At the age 14 he dropped out of school and became a welder to help support his family. • Him and some friend made a little band and called themselves the Wailing Wailers and made the song “Don’t judge”.

  8. 1962 Bob Marley (continued) • He is the king of reggae and was the first performer to achieve a worldwide audience. • Joe Higgs inspired him to start singing. • He married Alphartia Constantia Anderson and had kids. • He found a wound on his foot and thought it was a soccer wound. When he went to go get it checked out the doctor told him it was cancer. • He didn’t want to get it treated because of religious reasons, but when he went to go get it removed they couldn’t do anything about it cause it has spread thought-out his body.

  9. 1962 Bob Marley (continued) • He wanted to die in his home town but could not stand the flight home. • He died in Miami on May 11, 1981

  10. 1963 John F. Kennedy death • John F. Kennedy was the 35th President. • He was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts. • He graduated from Harvard and went in to the Navy in 1940. • He married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953

  11. 1963 John F. Kennedy(continued) • He died in Texas. • Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly shot three shots from a rifle at John F. Kennedy. • John F. Kennedy was shot in the head and neck. • He was shot around 12:30. • They were passing the Texas School Book Depository. • The car sped off to Parkland Memorial Hospital. • Lee Harvey Oswald worked at the school and had charges pressed adjust him for killing the President and shooting an Officer. • Vice President Lyndon Johnson became the 36th President of the United States.

  12. 1964 Vietnam War • The world had never seen anything like this before. • Both sides wanted to avoid direct military action. • They were scared of the threat of mutual nuclear destruction. • This period was punctuated by explosive situation. • 91% of Vietnam Veterans say they are glad they served. • 74% of them said they would serve again even knowing the outcome.

  13. 1965 Voting Right Act • In 1965 the voting right act grew out of both public protest and private political negotiation. • CORE and SCLC in staging nonviolent demonstration. • The voting right act of 1965 was not only gave African-Americans the right to vote, but also afforded them the opportunity to elect more African-Americans to public office at every level of government. • It was upheld and strengthened in 1970, 1975, 1982, 1992.

  14. 1966 World Cup • England and west Germany played. • England won. • The score was 4-2. • Willie the mascot was the first mascot in the world cup. • It was held in England. • It was the eighth world cup

  15. 1967 First Super Bowl • Green Bay Packers vs. Kansa City Cheifs • Green Bay Packers won • The score was 35-10 • It happened on January 15, 1967 • It was the first showdown between the NFL and AFL champions.

  16. 1968 Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death • On April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. • He was standing on the balcony of his motel room at Lorraine Motel in Memphis. • He was shot in the jaw by a .30-06 caliber rifle. • He was 39 years old when he died • The pronounced him died at 7:05 p.m.

  17. 1968 Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death (continued) • He spent 13 years of his life to non-violent protesting. • He was the youngest man to win an Nobel Prize. • His “I have a dream” speech inspired millions of people. • He married Coretta Scott and had two sons and two daughters • He was 35 when he won the Nobel Prize

  18. 1969 Moon Landing • July 16, 1969 Apollo 11 was lunched into space. • On July 20, 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the moon. • Neil Armstrong was the first human to land on the moon. • They colleted about 50lbs of rock and soil from the moon.
