  3. What is an “Empire” Click me • An empire is a group of countries or regions that are controlled by one ruler or one government (Merriam-Webster) • An empire can also be a very large business or group of businesses controlled by one person or company (Merriam-Webster)

  4. The Persian Empire Click Here • Can be considered the world’s first successful empire • Existed from 681 BCE/BC to 330 BCE/BC • Controlled a vast area of the Middle East (modern Iran can trace its history directly back into the Persian Empire) • The empire was at its height (greatest point) around 500 BCE/BC

  5. Persian Leaders Click Here • Zoroaster (500 BC) is a prophet who preaches Zoroastrianism • a monotheistic religion • The concept of heaven and hell originate here • Persian emperors • Cyrus the Great (576 to 530 BCE/BC) and Darius the Great (522 to 486 BCE/BC) lead the empire at its height • Xerxes I (486 to 465 BCE/BC) invades Greece (more on him later)

  6. Persian Accomplishments Click Here • Transportation – The “Great Royal Road” • Imperial bureaucracy • standard coinage • administrative provinces (parts of the empire run on behalf of the emperor)

  7. Alexander Again? Click Here • Alexander the Great conquers the Persian Empire in 330 BCE/BC (a lot more on him later)

  8. Phoenician Civilization Click Here • Phoenician civilization existed from 1500 to 300 BCE/BC • They are a sea trading civilization (trading Empire) • Located on the Mediterranean coast from Lebanon to North Africa • Establish Carthage as a seagoing trading civilization

  9. Phoenician Accomplishments Click Here • The Phoenician sea trade • creates maritime trade routes • Promotes ancient shipbuilding, and • Allows the Phoenicians to be an agent of cultural diffusion through its sea trading empire • The Phoenician alphabet is created (the foundation of modern phonetic alphabet)
