  3. PowerPoint Terminology • Backstage View – The new File tab in the Ribbon. Used to save, send, share, publish, open, etc. • Quick Access Toolbar – Top Left part of the PowerPoint Window (next to the PowerPoint icon). Great place to have quick access things like save or print. To add things to the  toolbar, right click an item in the ribbon and and choose Add to Quick Access toolbar. Or click the More button next to the toolbar to customize it. • The Ribbon – The Ribbon is a dynamic toolbar. Its options change dynamically depending on what task you are doing. • Tabs • Contextual Tabs • Groups -  The name of the group appears under the group itself. For example, the Home tab contains the Clipboard, Slides, Font, Paragraph, Drawing and Editing Groups. • Dialog box launcher • Mini Toolbar – appears after you have inserted text or items • Status Pane – Bottom left portion of the powerpoint window. Says how many pages you have, the name of the document you are working on, as well as Spelling errors. If you are under a sharepoint server, will tell you other people currently working on the document. • Zoom Slider – next to the View buttons. Zooms in and out of your workspace • Work Space- the main area you work in • Slide/Outline Pane – Left side of the powerpoint window. Shows slide order and allows for slide arrangement. • Notes Pane – add notes that you can view in presenter view, or on notes printout. • View Options • Normal- takes you to the workspace view • Slide Sorter – view your slides as thumbnails • Reading View – Used to view a powerpoint presentation in a window instead of fullscreen • Slide Show- Used to view current slide in presentation view • Help! – Button in the top right corner of the screen. (F1) • Templates • By clicking new presentation you will be given an area where you can choose to create a new blank slide, or slide based off of themes already downloaded to your computer with powerpoint (you will learn more about design themes on day 3). You can also choose to download a variety of themes and documents from office.com straight from powerpoint. Try exploring some of the PowerPoint templates and documents. • Placeholders • Placeholders are found in each of your layouts (except blank) and are the boxed areas set aside for quick text. They also have associated buttons, allowing  you to quickly place things like pictures, charts, smartart, etc. You can create placeholders in your layouts editor using Master Pages. • Inserting a Picture • To insert a picture in a PowerPoint slide, do any of the following: • Use a Placeholder – Placeholders come with easy access buttons to insert charts and media, like picture. • Insert Menu – Under the Insert menu, select Picture and browse to the file you want. • Screenshot (Day 2)- The screenshot option allows you to take a picture of your computer screen. Select Screenshot then either choose your available screen, or select Screen Clipping to have to option to drag and select a portion of your screen you want. • Editing a Picture • Edit your picture using the Picture Tools Contextual Tab in the Ribbon.

  4. Terminology cont • Remove Background – Enables you to remove the background of an image. Works differently then set transparency! By clicking Remove Background, it will attempt to crop and highlight out anything PowerPoint thinks is part of the background of your image whilst trying to keep the main focus of the picture. To specify areas to keep or areas to discard, use the appropriate buttons in the Background removal tab after you click on remove background. To use Mark Areas to keep, for example, draw a line across an area to keep. Click Keep changes when finished. • Corrections - Sharpen, Soften, Brightness and Contrast quick changes  to your image • Artistic Effects – adds a slew of artistic effects to your images. A lot like Filters in photoshop • Color - Adds a color overlay to your image. • Reset Picture – removes effects and resets your image to its defaults. Clicking the dropdown menu will allow you to only reset the image formats or both image format and size. • Picture Styles – Quick styles and borders • Arrange – arrange your picture order on the page layer • Crop – allows you to crop your picture, or change the picture shape.
