TOSC Program • University-based program—addresses science and engineering related to polluted sites • National program, funded by U.S. EPA since 1994 • Provide educational and technical assistance; directly address citizens concerns • Agreement with Oregon-area citizens to provide services • Two goals for tonight’s meeting: • Shed light on extent of problem • Promote effective public involvement

  4. Meeting Overview • Introduction to TOSC Program: Who are we? Why are we addressing ESOI issue? • Overview of site-cleanup process: Where is Envirosafe in process? • Visualization of ESOI contamination: Dr. Shu-Guang Li and TOSC team • TOSC recommendations

  5. Suspected polluted site—What do they do with it? Investigation: What pollutants are on-site? Where are they? Are they moving? What is the risk? Should we worry? How much? Risk Assessment R=E x T Site Investigation

  6. Where is ESOI in cleanup process? How should we clean it up? Various methods Goal: Protect Human Health, Protect Bugs and Bunnies Site Clean Up/Remediation

ESOI Status: Good news/bad news • Bad news: Still in investigation stage (with some idea of risk) • Good news: We have plenty of data to answer basic questions (but not all we need) • Where are pollutants? • What are those pollutants? • Is it moving? • Good news: You can still participate meaningfully in process—watchdog process

  8. IGW—Work of TOSC Team to Visualize Contamination • Contributions: Great pictures to show location of contaminants using ESOI data • Key question: Are contaminants moving off-site? • Provide analysis to help both community and agencies
