  5. 2,000 kiwis attend Outward Bound courses each year.

  7. and have experienced a deep connection to the natural environment.

  8. They discover surprising rewards from giving service to others,

  9. and realise action in their community is important and valued.

  10. In 2013, Outward Bound students have contributed 735 participant days to local Department of Conservation projects.

  11. There are inspiring Department of Conservation projects scattered all over the country. Many of which are local to graduating Outward Bound students. Could these benefit from more public support?

  12. Our vision… Better people, better communities, better world

  13. Background This short document follows a recent meeting with James Willcocks regarding potential partnership opportunities between Outward Bound and the Department of Conservation. It is designed to stimulate new discussion around ways we could work together to achieve our respective missions and objectives. The following slides are simply a range starting points from which together, we may be able to discuss and develop further. Shane Wratt – Business Courses Manager, Outward Bound

  14. Brand alignment Outward Bound and the Department of Conservation are both strong iconic New Zealand brands. Together they link people, conservation and education. They both promote a future where our natural environment is valued and protected, and the responsibility for it’s welfare is shared within our communities. There are many opportunities for our combined brand experience to offer greater participation, education and development to our employees, volunteers and customers.

  15. Exploring Partnership A partnership between Outward Bound and the Department of Conservation would be built from an existing foundation of shared values and could be developed in the following areas: 1. Conservation action 2. Volunteer engagement 3. Training 4. Education resources

  16. Conservation Action There are many social and environmental projects Outward Bound students contribute to within the Marlborough region. These range from working with local nurseries to beach clean ups. Last year Outward Bound students contributed 54 days of service, 735 person days on DOC projects. This work is currently done in partnership with local DOC representatives. This work is forms part of a concession agreement that has been in place for many years. Within our curriculum, these projects are about experiencing the act of giving service and the power of making a difference. When projects are specifically conservation related, they serve as environmental education as well as service education.

  17. Conservation Action Continued… These conservation experiences are rich learning opportunities for our students. As a way to strengthen our relationship with DOC both organisations could openly share their activities and success from working together on these particular projects. This could be in the form of media articles or updates distributed to our existing alumni and social media networks, strengthening both the Outward Bound and DOC brand message to key audiences.

  19. Volunteer Engagement At the end of each Outward Bound course month, we have 150 students re-entering their communities. Many arrive home with better awareness of their natural environment and an interest to contribute somehow. By partnering with DOC who have a presence in many New Zealand regions, we could provide an easy link for individuals to continue their intentions post course. We could help students with the pathway to DOC volunteering and DOC could regularly get motivated and keen young volunteers to join their networks and projects across the country.

Volunteer Engagement Continued… Through our community partnerships programme, it is also possible Outward Bound could create a specific programme for DOC youth volunteers (16-27 year olds) from across the country. This would be significantly subsidised and supported by Outward Bound community foundation and / or funders. Such a programme would be designed specifically for existing DOC volunteers and would be based on learning objectives decided by DOC leaders. This would be an annual programme and would be the responsibility of DOC to source the candidates, it would also be promoted where possible by Outward Bound. Student stories will be shared to respective alumni, increasing the relationship of both brands to youth networks and the general public.

  21. Training Our current instructional staff in Anakiwa all vary in their conservation knowledge. While some come with a masters degree in environmental science others have little experience in conservation related activities. It is thought a partnership with DOC could provide an affordable opportunity for further training and a better understanding of conservation management. This would provide development for our instructors and also lead to better delivery of our environmental course objectives. Our Instructors complete a three year contract with us before moving onto new areas. On average we have 8 experienced instructors leaving each year. For some, future DOC employment is an attractive possibility.

  22. Training Continued… It is also possible for Outward Bound to deliver professional development courses for leaders of all levels within DOC. We have public leadership courses, graduate partnerships, apprenticeship programmes and various custom designed options. We would be interested to explore how we could provide value to DOC in the exchange of services in this area.

  23. Education Resources Our location in Anakiwa is surrounded by a mixture of regenerating bush and some older established kahikatea stands. Our environment provides some immediate environmental education opportunities however, it is thought this could be even better with more conservation resources being made available. An example may be information plaques similar to those found in other DOC managed areas. There may also be scope to have a DOC information board outlining the great work you do in various areas around the country and why it’s making a difference. Post course, our students could also receive update information on DOC via our alumni programme communications and social media networks.

  24. Summary In summary, we have many alignments between us and it seems there are some obvious connections and shared benefits from us working closer together. We would love to explore these benefits with you in more detail. Whether it be arranging further meetings with key stakeholders or perhaps a more hands on approach through us hosting a free two day course in Anakiwa. Perhaps this would be an opportunity to participate in some activities as well as provide an opportunity for us to explore the various ways we could strengthen our relationship together.
