Zero Waste Plan – key elements • Issued – 9th June 2010 • Sets out key actions & targets to tackle the 20M t/y waste produced by Scotland: • 70% recycling by 2025 • Mandatory separate collections • Landfill bans • EFW input controls • Managing Scotland’s resources for Scotland’s economic & environmental benefit

Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources – key elements • Programme to reduce waste and create a more productive and circular economy • Overall aim: • Prevent Waste • Increase Resource Efficiency • Enable a shift towards a more circular economy • Target (2011 baseline) • Reduce Scotland’s waste by 7% by 2017 • Reduce Scotland’s waste by 15% by 2025

Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 Will significantly increase food waste capture for AD in Scotland • Food businesses: • > 50kg food waste / week to present for separate collection from 1 January 2014 • > 5kg food waste / week to present for separate collection from 1 January 2016 • Local authorities commence food waste collections 1 January 2014, complete by 1 January 2016 • Bans: • Discharge of food waste into public sewer from 1 January 2016 • Municipal biodegradable waste to landfill by 1 January 2021

Food Waste Arising in Scotland • Food Waste materials • Household - 566,000 tonnes • Hospitality Sector – 68,000 tonnes • Public Sector – 14,000 tonnes • Industrial food Waste – 1,590,000 tonnes • Currently 470,000 tonnes of the above is still sent to landfill • Most is suitable for AD • Processing half of this waste through AD has the potential to generate enough energy to power a city the size of Inverness • Info from David B

  9. AD Landscape • 14 plants: • tonnage capacity ~ 260ktpa (commercial only) • combined generation capacity of ~ 16MWe • Estimated at 65% capacity: • annual production 9200MWh • £8 - £9M revenue • 3500MWh heat potentially available

  10. Future Opportunities for AD in Scotland • Improving the resource efficiency of food & drink companies • Support for feasibility studies • SRF Loans • Improved heat utilisation on site: • Support through heat network partnership • Community facilities serving remote communities • Innovation

  11. Food waste to biofuel • Argent Energy • Biodiesel production from waste cooking oils, tallow etc • Fatty residues from sewage treatment process • Celtic Renewables • Pot ale & draff from whisky production into biobutanol • Commercialising process
