  2. Historic of Biodiesel in Brazil • 1975 - Starts Plan Production of Vegetable Oils for Energy Purposes (PROÓLEO) . Mixture compulsory 30% in diesel fuel. • 1980 - Brazil was among the first countries to register a patent for production of fuel

  3. Historic of Biodiesel in Brazil • PROÓLEO was never actually implemented, having been replaced by National Alcohol Program (PROÁLCOOL) • 2004 - the Federal Government launched the National Program of Biodiesel Production and Use (PNPB)

  4. PNPB • Aims to stimulate the production of biodiesel from various oil sources. • Promote social inclusion, and ensure competitive prices, quality and supply. • Is based in a in three perspectives: environmental, social and marketing.

  5. Law 11.097/05 • After being sanctioned Law 11.097/05, biodiesel production in Brazil began to take shape in fact. • It is permitted to add 2% biodiesel (B2) to mineral diesel, from voluntary to compulsory admixture from 2008, reaching minimum levels of 5% (B5) from 2013 onwards.

  6. Biodiesel Production • Biodiesel can be obtained through the following processes: esterification, cracking and transesterification. • Transesterification is the most commonly used because have more technological development in relation to others.

  7. Biodiesel Production • Biodiesel is obtained by reacting vegetable oils with an active intermediate formed by reaction of an alcohol with a catalyst. • "Brazil dominates the technology to produce biodiesel completely renewable, with use of ethanol from sugar cane in place of methanol (derived from oil) during the transesterification process."
