WHAT IS CO-OP ? • Co-op allows students to “try on” a potential career choice by going to work for the semester • 2 weeks in class Pre-Placement Session • Students work Monday - Friday for 8 hours per day and return to school approximately every other Monday for the Integration classes • You need to be make sure to get homework done every night and be present for every hour of pre-placement.

  4. Some Important Forms Before We Begin • Statement of Understanding • Confidentiality Agreement for your Co-op Experience • Permission for Media Release Form • **W.E.A.** Work Education Agreement signed by all 4 parties (you, teacher, a parent, your supervisor)

  5. WHY TAKE CO-OP? • Earn 4 credits doing what you ENJOY!! • Real Work Experience • Build your Resume for Apprenticeship, University, • College or the Workplace

Classroom Expectations • Although you will be out working for Co-op, we will still be spending a significant amount of time in class • We will be presenting to one another, working in groups, sharing experiences, etc.. • It is important we ALL feel included, respected and safe • WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO HELP YOU FEEL INCLUDED, RESPECTED AND SAFE? (BRAINSTORM AND SHARE ANSWERS- ON BOARD)

Classroom Instruction 2 weeks in class Pre-Placement Session Return to school every other Monday for Integration classes (Mandatory) Includes: notes, tests, quizzes, homework etc… linked to Related Credits Workplace Students work Monday -Friday for 8 hours per day Hours of the business, not school hours Development of Essential Skills and Work Habits Two Main Components of Co-op = Co-op Program = Commitment to BOTH Components

  15. MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED FOR CLASSROOM COMPONENT • 1 binder for class notes with paper and dividers  2. Disc or Memory Drive – Save all work as you go 3. Display Board for Co-op Fair (Construction paper, spray paint, border instructions to come)

  16. In Class Follow Dress Code See Student Handbook Work In accordance with rules and regulations of your placement For example, business attire, dress shoes, mechanic’s overalls… PPE- Personal Protective Equipment DRESS CODE

FREEDOM & TRUST • Co-op is different from traditional classes • Due to the nature of the course you are out of the school • Independence = Freedom + Responsibility • With FREEDOM comes RESPONSIBILITY and TRUST • We need to trust that you are where you are supposed to be • We WILL trust you until the trust is broken • Absences can cost you credits and will be added to your placement at the end!

FREEDOM & TRUST • How to maintain trust… - arrive to class and work on time everyday - If you are going to be absent or late for work call BOTH your teacher and supervisor - If you are going to be absent or late for class call your teacher -Avoid absence at all costs! (Reschedule appointments for non-work days!)

FREEDOM & TRUST How to maintain trust… - Inform teacher and supervisor of any situation – Absences, lates, sent home early, injury etc… - Be Open and Honest with your teacher and Supervisor (We are all a TEAM) - If you say you are going to do something… DO IT… “You are only as good as YOUR WORD”

  20. You Do NOT Get Paid $ for Co-op • You earn credits • Get great experience that often leads to a part-time job • You have already been trained if you have done a good job they might well hire you at the end of your CO-OP! • Opportunity to network and make contacts for future jobs

W.E.A • WORK EDUCATION AGREEMENT (WEA) • Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage, for all Cooperative Education (and OYAP) students will be the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. • WSIB coverage for Co-op participants is: rehabilitation services and other services as deemed by the WSIB, for injuries sustained at the co-op placement. • It is not medical and dental insurance (Which is Private/Personal) • Work Education Agreement (WEA) forms must be completed and signed before students commence their placement to ensure that coverage is in place. • The work agreement must be signed by the students and their respective parents or guardians, and their placement employers. Only then is the coverage in place. • Does not cover travelling to and from work or during lunch breaks

  22. WORKING “OUTSIDE” OF THE WEA • Students who are working irregular hours, (hours that are not identified on their Work EducationAgreement) Form must fill out a Work Education Agreement Amendment Form andhave it signed by their placement employer, parent and co-op teacher before hours/days can beworked, or there is NO WSIB coverage • Should only happen once in a while for special reasons • Students are not to attend their cooperative education placement during holidays, week-ends orother periods of time when the monitoring teacher is not available. There is no WEA coverage during these times. Should placement supervisors wish, and students agree, theplacement supervisors may hire the students to work during these days and assumeresponsibility for providing Workplace Safety & Insurance Board insurance.

  23. NO DRIVING • NO Driving of any motorized vehicle at/for your placement • This includes: cars, trucks, forklifts etc…. • Not to be a passenger in a personal or company vehicle – NO insurance coverage • We recommend you take public transit • If you need to go to a different location – Inform teacher AHEAD of time and need parent note

  24. LOGS • Extremely Important Requirement • Daily Record of activities and new skills developed • Record of BOTH In Class and Work • To be signed by your supervisor and submitted when teacher visits every week • Logs must be neat, clean, organized and thoroughly complete • Be as specific as possible about tasks, responsibilities and new learning • MUST be in PEN • Failure to complete and submit logs on time may result in loss of credits and/or withdrawal from program • Logs begin TODAY
