  11. National NBCTs • 4,913 CA teachers have earned their profession's top honor by achieving National Board Certification (342 new NBCTs in 2010). • The total number of teachers certified by NBPTS in USA is over 91,013. • NB is valued and respected. • Interest in increasing, nationwide.

What Does National Certification hold for Teachers? • The highest acknowledgement of accomplished teaching recognized at national level • An opportunity to grow and be challenged as a professional • An opportunity for teachers to affirm that they are accomplished professionals • Meaningful, useful, job embedded professional development opportunity • Engage in a professional learning community

Rationale for NB coursework • Differentiated by content and grade levels • National Standards drive expectations • Job embedded action research • Sensible sequence that BUILDS the “thesis” as you move through coursework • NBCT adjuncts—relevant and excellent role models • NB Candidates get free, continuous coaching outside of courses (online, meetings, appointments). • PREPARING the portfolio PREPARES you to be a candidate for the NB assessment. • Students have choices, options and a long term relationship with NU.

What is National Board Certification? • A voluntary process established by NBPTS • Achieved through a rigorous, performance-basedassessment. • Aimed to measure what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. • The process requires teachers to demonstrate how their performances improve student achievement. • National Board Certification is an advanced credential and complements a state license.

NB Five Core Propositions • Teachers are committed to students and their learning. • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. • Teachers are members of learning communities.

  23. National Board Certification Process( NBPTS application = $2600) PORTFOLIO • Video tapes • Student work • Beyond the classroom WRITING Describe, analyze and reflect ASSESSMENT CENTER • Half day • Six content prompts • Up to 30 minutes each • Respond on computer

Portfolio Requirements Entry 1: Sequence of lessons that reflect topic of study; emphasis on how you ASSSESS student learning (follow 2 students) Entry 2: Video ENGAGEMENT in learning (YOU with whole group) Entry 3: Video ENGAGEMENT in learning (student to student—small group) Entry 4: PROFESSIONAL contributions—with families, colleagues, community

Marriage = NB and NU • NU offers 5 courses ( NBC Teacher Leadership Specialization) that reflect NB Portfolio Entries. • NU offers courses to align with NB timelines. • NB scores candidate portfolios. • NU scores Capstone portfolios. • NU provides graduate credit and support services. • NB CERTIFIES teachers as NBCTs.

Avoid Misunderstandings • Use NUPTDC website tool, resources and processes to inform and to enroll the “right” students into targeted cohort groups, as outlined on www.nuptdc.org • Embrace two way communication with admissions advisors ,managers, and NB faculty advisors. • Share accountability and responsibilities for student success and recruitment results.

Also, I suggest that you join one of the upcoming free webinars to hear from the NBCT faculty about the option and schedules for cohort participation. Interested and ready to enroll ? • Click on the MASTER’s COHORT Link to preview the course schedule. • Click on the STATE or region that applies to you. • Open the ZIP file to preview required forms for enrollment. • Prepare the graduate application form and FAFSA form (if needed), but do not submit yet • Complete and submit the verification form. • You are now prepared to enroll with an NU Advisor • Your verification form ensures that you have accurate knowledge about this program, National Board Certification options, and about cohort schedules for degree completion. • The NUPTDC will forward your verification form to an NU ADVISOR and you will be contacted for your interview and next steps.

NUPTDC National University is headquarters for NBCT support and services: Professional Teaching and Leadership Development Center Offers support and programs for NBC initiatives: Face-to-face and online support meetings Access to Candidate Support Providers (CSPs) online and onground Fee support for applications University credit as desired, (not required). 34

CLARITY • National University is separate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, but clearly associated with the standards, tools, resources and assessments. • National University does NOT certify students as NBCTs. • National University will assist and support active NB candidates who want to submit a portfolio or TAKE ONE to the NBPTS for scoring.

National University employs National Board Certified Teachers to teach courses that require knowledge of the NB standards, evidence based inquiry process, and assessment of teaching and learning performances. • The ten, one month courses in the degree program are carefully scheduled to parallel National Board timelines and requirements which benefits students who choose to be active NB candidates as they produce the portfolio during program of study.

Three NUPTDC Options: Option A: Master’s Degrees– Master of Arts in Teaching Degree with specialization in National Board Leadership ; Master of Science in Instructional Leadership with NBC focus; Masters in Collaborative Leadership with NBC focus Option B: Stand alone Certificatein National Board Certification Teacher Leadership (5 graduate credit courses or 5 Continuing Education courses ) Option C: Support Network –membership in virtual community with updated resources and 24/7 access to trained CSPS in all disciplines; online access; face to face appointments; monthly group meetings at satellite locations. 37

Your student is READY! • NUPTDC has cohort (offsite) requests in progress. • Bonnie will get contract approvals and advisors will ensure that each student signs and returns for cohort discounts as outlined. • 12 signed contracts for the proposed cohort and schedule allows courses to be developed and students to enter. • Bonnie keeps courses locked until procedures are completed..
