  1. Does music genre affect hours of sleep of Washburn high schoolers? Camilo Ferreira and Sam Rysdon AP Statistics // Mr. Selvaag 6th Hour 2018

  2. Introduction • High school -> prevalent stress culture = decreased sleep • Could music culture of high school have an impact as well? • We wanted to figure out if the genre of music someone most listens to affects the amount of sleep they get on average • We hope to see an association between these two variables in order to help better understand how/why high school students get different amounts of sleep

  3. Data Collection • Population: All students at Washburn High School • We collected data through a simple random sample • We numbered given classrooms at Washburn, and randomly selected 10 of them. We randomly selected 20 students in each room (numbering them off). We thus collected responses of 200 students • Survey consisted of two questions: • 1) “Of these options, what type of music do you listen to the most?” • 2) “How many hours of sleep do you get per night on average?”

  4. Exploratory Data Analysis

  5. Exploratory Data Analysis (0.217) (0.217) (0.304) (0.261) (0.115) (0.207) (0.415) (0.207) (0.171) (0.41) (0.35) (0.25) (0.233) (0.167) (0.3) (0.0571) (0.257) (0.286) (0.4) (0.175) (0.225) (0.315) (0.24) (0.22)

  6. Exploratory Data Analysis (Average) hours of sleep

  7. Test for Significance = PHANTOMS !

  8. Inference P: We are interested in if there is an association between preferred genre of music and average hours of sleep. H: Null Hypothesis (Ho) = There is no association between preferred genre of music and average hours of sleep. Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) = There is an association between preferred genre of music and average hours of sleep.

  9. Inference A: Random - We collected data from a simple random sample 🙌 Independent - 10% Condition -> n < (1/10)N -> 200 < (1/10)N -> 2,000 < N 🙌 (b/c there are at least 2,000 students at Washburn(give or take)) Expected Counts - All expected counts are at least 5 -> Smallest one: (23 x 44) / 200 = 5.06 🙌 N: We will use a Chi-squared test for Association/independence

  10. Inference T: Chi-squared (𝛘²) GDC: Put data in matrices and calculate -> 𝛘² = 21.21331233 Degrees of Freedom: (c-1)(r-1) -> (4-1)(4-1) -> (3)(3) = 9 df O: 1) Table -> 𝛘² of 21.21 and 9 df Value is between 0.02 and 0.01 0.01<P<0.02 2) GDC -> 𝛘²cdf(21.21331233, 1x10⁹⁹, 9) P = 0.011736228

  11. Inference M: 0.0117 < 0.05, so P-value is significant Because the P-value is significant at the α = 0.05 level, we reject the null hypothesis. S: There is strong evidence of an association between preferred genre of music and average hours of sleep. =

  12. Final Summary While it does look like there is some association between the two variables, keep in mind the countless confounding variables that affects average hours of sleep, as well as music interest. The association much more likely due to how both variables are actually dependent variables on personality, lifestyles, and any other nature/nurture variables. Limitations: Sample size (Sample size was too large to take check off “independent” assumption), confounding variables, didn’t take into account other genres of music
